Former Winnfield Mayor and City Councilman Ronald “Cloud” Goff

The Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office is looking for 39-yearold Oshay Booker. He described as 5’09” and 160 pounds. According to a post on Sheriff Cranford Jordan’s Facebook page, the shooting happened Tuesday on Spillway Road. The suspect is believed to have fled the area in a forest green Honda Pilot. He is believed to be armed and dangerous. On Wednesday, the sheriff posted that he may be headed out of state.

Oshay’s victim is former Winnfield mayor and city councilman Ronald “Cloud” Goff, Oshay’s stepfather.

Louisiana Loggers Association Puts Together Political Action Committee

The Louisiana Loggers Association has been working hard for our Loggers and Log Haulers. This year, the 25-year association reorganized and redirected the purpose of the LLA. With loggers struggling to survive this insurance crisis, representation at the capitol was vital. A Political Action Committee was put into place and more loggers were added to the LLA board. The LLA was able to form many friendships and allies with legislators and associations in Baton Rouge during this session. These friends assisted in aiding the LLA to benefit the timber community.

HB 106 (McFarland) – The Right to Farm and Forest Law; to include forest and timber land and forest and timber operations in the legislative declaration that agricultural land and operations must be protected; and to provide for relative matters.

Gun Violence Awareness Month, Stay Aware

For the month of June, awareness has been set-aside for Gun Violence. Getting involved in our community to become more aware of how this type of violence has affected the people around us is important for many reasons. The Winnfield City Police Department will be hosting a Gun Violence Awareness program on Saturday, June 15 th at 11:00 A. M. This will be taking place at the Winnfield City Court Building.

Access to a firearm is the common denominator in every firearm-related death or injury. Psychologists work with law enforcement, public health researchers, and others to achieve a greater understanding of the different forms of firearm violence and its victims.

Library Summer Reading Program Kicks Off

Readers of all ages will explore all things space this summer as the Winn Parish Libraries present “A Universe of Stories” during the summer reading program. The 2019 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through young adult, with programs, prizes, story times, and more.

Registration for “A Universe of Stories” is going on now. Drop by your local branch and fill out a registration packet. Registration is complete after you check out your first book.

We are also excited to offer some of the most popular performers and “Out of This World” crafts. Our performers include Nathan J. Roberts, Matthew Noel, Frank and Tammy, Cowboy Bob, and Dorian LaChance. Unfortunately, Harvey Rabbit will not be able to join us this year. His friend, Laura Allured, is having some medical problems. I know you will join us in sending out our get well soon wishes. The crafts include galaxy slime, a space sun catcher and moon rocks.

Local Hog Traps Available to Landowners

Debra Hubbard, Dugdemona SWCD, Justin Reed US Forest Service, Brad Cooper, US Forest Service District Ranger, Madelyn Cheatwood, NRCS Natchitoches Field Office, and Macey Canerday, Natchitoches SWCD.

The Dugdemona Soil and Water Conservation District and the US Forest Service Winn Ranger District have recently signed an agreement to provide Feral Swine Trapping assistance to any landowner who owns or controls property within a 1-mile radius of the Winn Ranger District. This is a 5-year agreement to provide trapping assistance to control Feral Swine populations near Forest Service land.

Dugdemona SWCD personal presented a program on Feral Swine Control and the new agreement with the US Forest Service. Winnfield Primary Principal Speaks On Merging of Two Schools

With the 2018-19 school year coming to an end, there are some changes that are going to take place this summer. Candy Polk, Principal of Early Childhood Center and Winnfield Primary School, spoke to the Rotary Club on May 22, 2019, along with Vice Principle Cory McCartney. There will be a transition this summer, beginning the next school year, the Early Childhood Center and Winnfield Primary will all be on one campus. The school will be located in the present Winnfield Primary School building. Ms. Polk expressed some of the benefits that will come from this transition, with some of those being, effective supervision, all teachers, students and staff on one campus, saving the parish money and easy on the parents. Grades Pre-K through 4 th grade will be operating as one school. Some of the challenges that were found with having two campuses was trying to be two places at once. Principal Polk asked for the support not only from the parents, but also from the community as a whole.

Dug Fest Scheduled for June 1st

It is sweet summer time, and that means the Annual Dug Fest is here. With so many events going on and fun for everyone. Saturday, June 1 st , the day will begin with a Big Bass Bash, for those who love fishing. Hosted at Black Lake, at safe daylight boats will launch out and have until 3:00pm until weigh in. Starting at 8:00am the 5K Splash dash will roll out for those who like a good morning run.

There will also be Uncle Earl’s Watermelon Eating Contest, Water Pit Volleyball, BBQ Cook Off, and Dug Fest Idol, Battle of the Choirs, Chalk Walk, Soap Box Derby and so much more. These events will be taking place all through out the day.

The event was to honor those law enforcement officers that were killed in 2018 in the line of duty. Each officer name was etched on a memorial wall, which joined hundred of names of

Melinda M. Miles, Inducted into Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame in April

The Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame has a dozen new members among its ranks after a ceremony on April 27 to recognize the honorees. The Hall of Fame has inducted 232 members since it started in 2008. Toby Lepley, LSU AgCenter associate vice-president and 4-H program leader, said the work and sacrifices of the 12 honorees are significant. The 2019 Hall of Fame class represents over 250 years of service to the 4-H program, with each of these inductees representing countless hours of service and dedication to the youth of our state,” he said. “They serve as role models and mentors for all of us, from AgCenter employees to volunteers to our 4-H members. This 2019 class is truly the picture of leadership and dedication.”
