Louisiana Forest Festival on track in 2021

The Louisiana Forest Festival is on track to begin on April 23-24 this year, after being cancelled due to COVID-19 in 2020.

The festival encompasses a wide variety of timber related activities. There are numerous forestry equipment displays and related exhibits. Professional lumberjack sports

In addition to the forestry activities; The festival will have fun, crafts and food throughout the day. competitors come from throughout the United States to participate in the show.

State Health Department Confirms First Case of U.K. COVID Variant in Louisiana

The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed the state’s first identified case of the COVID-19 variant, SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7., frequently referred to as the U.K. variant because it is prevalent in the United Kingdom, in an individual in the Greater New Orleans area.

This variant spreads more easily from one person to another than other viral strains currently circulating in the United States, though It has not been shown to cause more severe disease. Health experts believe current COVID-19 vaccines are effective against the variant strain.

26th annual Hog Dog Trials to begin on schedule

26th annual Hog Dog Trials to begin on schedule

The 26th annual Hog Dog Trials are set to begin at the Winn Parish Fairgrounds on it’s normal date of March 24-28 after last years event was pushed back until Oct.

Winn Parish will soon be filled with competitors from across the world to watch and compete in our down home tradition and competition of hog baying.

Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials began in 1995, due to its namesake and native of Winnfield Earl Long being an avid stockman and boar hunter, and saw 1,200 people enjoy the festivities, but now has more than 12,000 visitors.

Through a shortened season and games being cancelled due to Hurricane Laura, Hurricane Delta and COVID-19, the Winnfield Senior High School Football Team didn’t take the games they played for granted, and now, players are being recognized on the All-District 3-2A Teams for 2020. st

David Simmons, OL, Sr. was voted in as All-District 1 st team.

School board elects new president, vice president for new year

At the regular Winn Parish School Board meeting on Jan. 4 Todd Martin was elected president of the board and Matt Walton was elected as Vice President for the new year.

The board extended their declaration of emergency that was put into effect previously due to damages caused by Hurricane Laura at various schools across the parish, and are in talks with FEMA to fix the damages.

Gates sworn in as Winnfield City Judge

Gates sworn in as Winnfield City Judge

On Jan. 4, longtime lawyer for Winnfield, Keith Gates, was sworn in as the newly elected City Court Judge.

“America was founded on ideals that all men are created equal in term of the law,” Judge Gates said. “Judges are the keepers of the American law. Many people asked what type of judge I hope to be, and it gave me moments of thought and I found my answer in the Bible in Kings 3.”

“It’s an honor and a privilege to work as a judge, and a big responsibility to be the judge for the Winn Parish people,” newly elected Louisiana Supreme Court Judge Jay McCallum said. “We want honest judges, but most of all we want fair judges, and Keith Gates is one of the best people for the job.”

Congress passes emergency corona relief bill for loggers

Members of Congress recognized the important role the timber harvesting industry plays in the United States economy by including both logging and log hauling businesses in the Emergency Coronavirus Relief Act of 2020. The bill includes language appropriating $200 million in funding for logging and log trucking businesses who saw a greater than 10 percent loss in revenues from January 1 through December 1, 2020 related to the COVID-19 pandemic, as compared to revenues for the same period in 2019.

Logging and log hauling businesses were deemed to be essential service providers, but have struggled with making fixed cost payments as a result of reduced markets for the unrefined forest products they produce.
