Qualifying Ends, State and Local Elections Set

Winn Parish Sheriff Cranford Jordan was the first candidate in line when qualifying opened last Tuesday. He was joined by Deputies Randy Turner (left) and Aleta Hoffman (right) as Deputy Clerk of Court Hayden Boyett assisted with the qualifying. Approximately 25 people qualified for 18 local races in the parish.

Qualifying ended Thursday at 4:30 P.M. for both state and local elections. Of the 17 local races up for election, 11 will be elected without opposition. Lee J. Taylor (No Party) of Winnfield challenges Incumbent Sheriff Cranford Jordan Jr. (No Party) of Winnfield.

Winn Parish School System Holds Opening Day Assembly

On Thursday August 8 th at the CLTCC campus in Winnfield, the Winn Parish School Board held an assembly for the entire school system in preparation for the new school year. Every teacher in the parish assembled for a breakfast followed by presentations from the Superintendent Mr. Steve Bartlett and Princinpals Renea Johnson (Atlanta High School), Paula Jones (Calvin High School), Aaron Durbin (Dodson High School), Candy Polk (Winnfield Primary School), Brent Carpenter (Winnfield Middle School), and Jane Griffin (Winnfield Senior High School).

WSHS Students Receive Forestry Tech Certifications

In order from left to right, Ryan Riley-Atlanta Ag teacher, Aaron Babers-Dodson Ag teacher, Trevor Higgs-Georgetown, Hannah Bruce-Grant, Ethan Fralick-Grant, Hunter Neathery-WSHS, Emma Vines-WSHS, Tyler Garner-Georgetown, Shyann Goodeaux-WSHS, Austin Stevenson-WSHS.

During the school year, a select few students from Winnfield Senior High and other schools across the state qualified through competition to participate in a forestry certification during the first and second weeks of July. The program covered silviculture, dendrology, biology, business math, surveying, forestry implements, mapping, locating information, and more.

First Baptist Church Will Host Guest Speaker From Operation Christmas Child

On Sunday, August 18 at 11 AM, First Baptist Church is having a guest speaker, Jamacia David, whose life was changed by the work of Operation Christmas Child. Jamacia David grew up in Guyana, South America. With her father working in another country and her mother struggling to make ends meet, life was tough, until one day, she received a shoebox from Operation Christmas child. Every year Operation Christmas Child collects shoeboxes filled with toys and other goods to give to children in need from other countries. If you are interested in donating to Operation Christmas Child, contact First Baptist Church for more details.

Calvin Baseball has Two Players named to All-State Teams

The 2019 Calvin High School Baseball Team was represented this season on the Louisiana Sports Writers and the Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association All-State teams. Anthony Adams (Sophomore) pitcher and Wayne Curtis Huckaby (Freshman) shortstop were awarded First Team All-State honors by the LBCA and Honorable Mentions by the LSWA.

Winn Parish Students to Receive Free Lunch, Second Year

Winn Parish School Board today announced an amendment to its policy for serving meals to students under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for the 2019-2020 school year. All students will be served breakfast at no charge at the following sites:

Atlanta High School

Calvin High School

Dodson High School

Winnfield Primary School

Library Summer Reading Program Ends August 3

The staff at the Winn Parish Library has had a “BLAST” with this year’s theme, “A Universe of Stories.” We hope all the participants enjoyed the performers, crafts/activities, prizes and most importantly reading great books. However, all great missions must end and return to earth at some point.
