The Atlanta Baptist Church ablaze on Feb. 17. Winn Parish Fire District 3 (WPFD), Winnfield Fire Department (WFD), Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office and Atlanta PD all responded to the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s office.

The 8th Judicial District Court will be closed Wednesday, February 17, Thursday, February 18, and Friday, February 19. We will reopen on Monday, February 22.

On Wednesday February 10, the Winn Correctional Center suffered a blackout caused by damages to equipment by a lightning strike, according to Sherriff Cranford Jordan.

15 electricians worked on restoring power, but due to the ice storm weather threat, plans had to be made to move all 300+ prisoners that the correctional center holds, after it was clear restoration to the site wouldn’t be done in time.

The Winn Parish Sheriff ’s Office is seeking assistance in identifying three individuals in relation to a theft at Walmart for over $2,200. They are white male subjects, and may be in a white Crown Victoria with after-market wheels and a mid-90s model Ford F-150 or F-250, dark in color, with after-market fog lights, blue headlight bulbs, cab lights, and chrome fenders.

An 8-month long disturbing joint investigation by the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff ’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, Natchitoches Parish Sheriff ’s Office High Tech Crime Unit, Rapides Parish Sheriff ’s Office, Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations, Rapides Parish Sheriff ’s Office, US Postal Service, Bossier City Marshal Office NWLA-ICAC Task Force, Natchitoches Parish District Attorney’s Office and Natchitoches Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force has led to the arrest of a Natchitoches man on multiple felony charges ranging from child pornography, narcotics, theft, identity theft and others according to Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Stuart Wright.

The investigation began back in May of 2020 when Rapides Parish Sheriff ’s Deputies contacted the NPSO Criminal Investigations Division reporting that they had arrested 33-year-old Christopher Aaron Stanfield of Natchitoches on narcotics, weapon and property offenses.

It was a scary and dangerous February, 1 for the Winnfield Fire Dept. Early in the morning, fire fighters responded to a mobile home residential fire on Lennox Ave.

Off duty fire fighters arrived to find fire and smoke coming from the rear of the home. It was at this time fire fighters noticed a neighbor screaming that a woman and her two infant children were inside.

Fire fighters then observed a woman at the back door with fire and smoke around her holding her two children screaming for help.

This week, 378 vaccine providers across the state will receive very limited doses of COVID vaccine. These providers — including 112 chain pharmacies, 127 independent pharmacies, 52 hospitals, 15 community health centers (including 13 federally qualified health centers, or FQHCs), 6 rural health clinics (RHCs), 28 public health providers and 38 other healthcare sites — represent all nine public health regions and 64 parishes of the state.

LDH has published the list of participating providers, along with their locations and contact information, on its website: covidvaccine.la.gov. In addition, residents can call 211 to find a vaccine provider near them.

Future distribution is dependent on vaccine made available to the state, among other factors. To stress, there is no guarantee that providers receiving vaccine this week will receive vaccine in the future.

During the regular Winn Parish School Board meeting on February 1, talks about the end of the year school LEAP testing occurred and how with the abbreviated year the school system would handle it.

Superintendent Steve Bartlett had talks with other parish superintendents about the weight that the test usually have on students.

“I don’t think it will be a wise decision to assess children on areas based on testing this year,” Bartlett said. “This has not been a usual year, in fact, it’s been most unusual. We started this school year late, lost one quarter of the yar last year, then we had Hurricane Laura come through, then Delta, all while battling COVID since last Spring. It’s been a difficult year for students and teavhers, and we don’t think it’s the right thing to do to punish students, districts, schools or teachers, but we still need the data they can yield.”
