Dodson Shooting Leaves One Dead and One Injured

At around 5:40 A.M. on Wednesday August 14 th , the Winn Parish Sheriff’s office was notified of a shooting at 104 North Boundary in Dodson, Louisiana. The Sheriff’s units and Dodson Police Department responded. Upon arrival, it was discovered that two white males who had received gunshot wounds to the head. The two victims, Christian Dale Evans, 30, of Jonesboro and Rodger Harrell Gregory, 65, of Farmerville, were left in critical condition. The suspect was Justin S. Burnett, 30, of Sikes, Louisiana.

Local Man Dies In Natchitoches Parish Shooting

At approximately 8:17 p.m., NATCOM 911 Center received 911 reports of a shooting in the 800 block of Weaver Cemetery Road near Chestnut.

NPSO deputies and Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office responded to the scene arriving in 19 minutes.

Deputies discovered a male identified as Dalton Edward McQuillin, 24, lying in the front yard of a residence with life threatening injuries from a single gunshot wound to the head.

On Wednesday, August 14, the Winnfield Rotary Club hosted District Governor (North Louisiana), Alan Barth of Monroe. In his speech, he gave an overview of the goals and expectations of the Rotary club at the local, national, and international level. Winnfield City Council Holds August Meeting

On August 13, the Winnfield City Council held their regular monthly meeting. After addressing some public concerns about the community, the council recognized those who participated in repairing the animal shelter in Winnfield. Under old business, councilman Hamms followed up on a previous nonaction item inquiring about the charter for the City Marshall and City Judge and elections. It was determined that the City Marshall and City Judge became 6 year terms to align with the District Attorney and District Judge. This issue was set aside. Next, a motion to Adopt Ordinance No. 12 of 2019- Placement and Removal of Trash/Garbage Receptacles was tabled.

Qualifying Ends, State and Local Elections Set

Winn Parish Sheriff Cranford Jordan was the first candidate in line when qualifying opened last Tuesday. He was joined by Deputies Randy Turner (left) and Aleta Hoffman (right) as Deputy Clerk of Court Hayden Boyett assisted with the qualifying. Approximately 25 people qualified for 18 local races in the parish.

Qualifying ended Thursday at 4:30 P.M. for both state and local elections. Of the 17 local races up for election, 11 will be elected without opposition. Lee J. Taylor (No Party) of Winnfield challenges Incumbent Sheriff Cranford Jordan Jr. (No Party) of Winnfield.

Winn Parish School System Holds Opening Day Assembly

On Thursday August 8 th at the CLTCC campus in Winnfield, the Winn Parish School Board held an assembly for the entire school system in preparation for the new school year. Every teacher in the parish assembled for a breakfast followed by presentations from the Superintendent Mr. Steve Bartlett and Princinpals Renea Johnson (Atlanta High School), Paula Jones (Calvin High School), Aaron Durbin (Dodson High School), Candy Polk (Winnfield Primary School), Brent Carpenter (Winnfield Middle School), and Jane Griffin (Winnfield Senior High School).

WSHS Students Receive Forestry Tech Certifications

During the school year, a select few students from Winnfield Senior High and other schools across the state qualified through competition to participate in a forestry certification during the first and second weeks of July. The program covered silviculture, dendrology, biology, business math, surveying, forestry implements, mapping, locating information, and more.
