The Community Easter Event was held in the Earl K. Long Memorial Park on Saturday April 3 where children of all ages hunted close to 10,000 eggs scattered by the Easter bunny, who stayed around to take pictures with the children.

Other events were inflatables for children to play on, a cakewalk for children 12 and under to win cake prizes donated by the community, cotton candy provided by the rotary club and the Family church provided hot dogs for lunch free of charge.

Early Voting will be held in the Registrar of Voters office in the Winn Parish Courthouse Saturday, April 10 through Saturday, April 17(closed Sunday, April 11) from 8:30 AM until 6:00 PM.

Enter through the Main Street entrance. The election will be Saturday, April 24. Parish wide there is a run off for BESE District 4 between Michael Melerine and “Cassie” Williams.

The Winn Parish Medical Center has seen renovations and a shakeup recently, and part of that is moving nurse practitioners Dana Vines and Angela Thorn into the Winn Wellness Clinic to focus on pediatric and women’s health.

Vines is a nurse practitioner board certified in women’s health and family practice with 11 years experience as a nurse practitioner and 29 years in nursing.

She specializes in contraceptive management, pap smears, gynecological exams, breast exams, hormone management and disease prevention.

Kiwanians Bill Gaddis, Margaret Coon, Mary Lou Blakey, Shonna Moss and Rita James worked tirelessly on Saturday to clean up the Earl K. Long park to get it ready for the Easter Egg Hunt.

The Kiwanians were joined by people around the community in efforts to get the park up to shape like officer Jessica Mc.Daniel, the First Assembly of Church and God church and Elders Keen and Grant and Gino Deleon. Also Benjamin Smiley and Tami Harrel and Kale Ferriss and Halie Rhodes along with our City of

Winnfield Mayor George Moss. With mayor Moss paying for pizza at the clean up.

The crew finished on Sunday afternoon and gave the little ones a safe place to hunt for hidden Easter eggs.

Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell is awarding nearly $2.5 million in grants to local governments and parish school systems in Northwest Louisiana to promote energy efficiency.

The recipients of Campbell’s 2021 efficiency grants for Northwest Louisiana public institutions are:

• City of Shreveport: $250,000

• Caddo Parish Fire District 8: $50,000

• Town of Greenwood: $17,837

• Bossier Parish Community College: $500,000

The Rotary Club of Winnfield was visited by new CEO of the Winn Parish Medical Center Monica Lewis who talked about the ongoing renovations and changes happening at the medical center.

The renovations were announced when owner Rock Bordelon visited on Aug. 10, 2020 announcing that the employees at the medical center would all receive paid bonuses after their exceptional service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The renovations in the first phase are complete, with new tile put in most of the hospital, renovated rooms and a renovated cafeteria.

“We survived COVID,” Lewis said. “We’re in a very good spot, and COVID actually helped us financially”

Though, Lewis said that morale took a hit and it was hard at times to work through the pandemic, and had a patient in the hospital every week since last April, finally having a reprieve last week that marked their first day without a COVID patient.

At the March 22 school board meeting, Superintendent Steve Bartlett presented the school calendar for the 2021-2022 school year. The school board will vote on the proposed calendar at the next meeting.

Voters cast their ballot in Louisiana for U.S. Representative for the 5th Congressional District, BESE District 4 and Winn Parish Police Juror District 7.

For Police Juror of District 7 Jesse Delane Cox (Rep) with 146 votes,31 percent,and Frank McLaren (NoPty) with 170 votes, 36 percent, will face off in a run-off election.

When Winnfield native Javonti Thomas enrolled at Northwestern State University, he originally signed up to be an English Education major.

“I never really thought about communications until I was at orientation,” Thomas said. I actually changed the day of freshmen orientation. I met one of the communication professors at the time, and they told me to do radio, and I was like, ‘radio?’ I never thought about radio, I just like to write.

Thomas’ introduction into radio with KNWD his freshmen year encouraged him to explore the breadth of what the Department of New Media, Journalism, and Communication Arts had to offer, including broadcast media, which would later become his career.
