Winnfield City Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Saturday, June 22, at 3:27 am. Firefighters arrived on scene in less than 5 minutes with 3 units. The fire was located on 600 Washington Street, Winnfield. When officials arrived the structure was 60% involved.

WSHS Baseball lands players on AII-Cenla and All-State Teams. Justin Lawson,Sr. received All-Cenla and All-State honors for the second year in a row. Junior’s Jake Lashley and Eli Lasyone were honored with All-Cenla and All-State honors. Joshua Tinnerello, Jr. was honored with All-State. Junior, Brett Jurek and Senior Edward Teal received All-Cenla honors. Personally speaking, several of the Winnfield Tiger players got overlooked for All-Cenla and All-State having better stats, but that’s the sports writers neglecting to look at the numbers a nd letting politics control the voting. But that’s a different story.

The 17th Annual Youth Fishing Derby was held on June 8th by the Winn Ranger District of the Kisatchie National Forest, the Winnfield Bass Club, Sheriff Cranford Jordan and the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office. There were over 60 youth ages 2-12 who participated in the event, along with parents and others. Over 100 people attended the fishing Ranger Bradley Cooper thanks all of the parents and guardians who brought their children to the event on Saturday morning.

The pond was stocked with 825 pounds of nice sized catfish for the event. The fishing was fantastic with more than 140 fish caught! There was a great deal of family fun as children and youth enjoyed fishing in the beautiful National Forest settinized.

In the 2-4 class, Leah Catlin caught the biggest fish at 5.32 pounds, and Reese Avery Reed had the biggest stringer at 4.20 pounds.

Article 120-The first “Winn Parish” Louisiana State Administration at Baton Rouge—How it happened, to be continued next week. Just after the New Year, I visited relatives and friends in Baton Rouge for several days. I was greatly impressed by the great number of former Winnfield and Winn Parish people now living in the capitol city. This migration of Winn parish people to Baton Rouge started with the inauguration of Huey Long as Governor of Louisiana in May 1928. The only native Winn parish citizen that I can recall then living in Baton Rouge was Bill Heard Wright, who incidentally is a first cousin to both Huey and our present governor Earl K. Long. While on the recent trip to Baton Rouge, I had a very pleasant visit with Dr. T. Harry Williams, Professor of History at LSU and noted author of several best selling historical books. Dr.

Winn Correctional Center has relocated all but 100+ of its prisoners to other locations. Those who are have remained are Class A trustees are being retained to maintain operations of the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office chase team. The trustees will continue caring for the dogs and horses used on the chase team to track down suspects.

The facility is in prime position to expand, and in doing so boost the local economy.

How are they exporting prisoners and expanding at the same time?

The Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office is looking for 39-yearold Oshay Booker. He described as 5’09” and 160 pounds. According to a post on Sheriff Cranford Jordan’s Facebook page, the shooting happened Tuesday on Spillway Road. The suspect is believed to have fled the area in a forest green Honda Pilot. He is believed to be armed and dangerous. On Wednesday, the sheriff posted that he may be headed out of state.

Oshay’s victim is former Winnfield mayor and city councilman Ronald “Cloud” Goff, Oshay’s stepfather.
