Winnfield Middle School sees

District Attorney and head coach for the Winnfield Middle School Track and Field team Chris Nevils is excited for the start of the new season that starts with their first meet in Sept.

“We’ve really seen our team grow this year,” Nevils said. “We probably had twice as many this year than we did this time last year. Nevils attributes the uptick in athletes to the children and their parents wanting them to get out of the house after being cooped up for over a year.

Many bricks, like the one to the left, pose as safety concerns for anyone visiting the park. This brick sticks out right before a stair case, inviting anyone to fall.

The Long’s have become synonymous with not only Winnfield, but Louisiana as a whole.

The Louisiana Political Museum was created in 1987 because of the affect the Long’s had on Louisiana politics, and after the death of Earl K. Long in 1960, his body was buried in the Earl K. Long Memorial Park, and since then a statue was put into the park as an attraction and memorial for the iconic figure.

Lately, however, residents of Winnfield have voiced their displeasure with how the park has been treated.

The Winnfield Middle School was hit the hardest out of all the schools during hurricane Laura last year, but is now up and running with it’s students back into the building.

After the hurricane, much of the building was infested with mold, and the seventh and eight graders had to relocate to the Winnfield Senior High School, due to their area being unsafe to be in.

“In all it costs about $1.6 million to fix the damages,” Mark Maxwell Maintenance Manager of the schools said. “But we had the Cadillac of insurances, and we only had a $100,000 deductible, and a lot of that was paid off with grants and other funding.”
