Lightening never strikes twice in the same place….HOLLYWOOD struck again in the Piney Woods as the Executive Producer of the Disney movie BLAZE visited Winnfield for a community meeting and viewing of the feature films starring Paul Newman as the flamboyant Louisiana Governor, Earl K. Long. Thirty five years ago, Winnfield was featured in this theatrically released movie. As told to the press in 1989. Ron Shelton, Director of the film, explained the work is a historical melo-drama based on the tumultuous affair of then Governor Long and New Orleans stripper, Blaze Starr, during his tenure in office. This is a state, “ where Politics is the favorite sport” according to the then Mayor of Winnfield , Max Kelley, who spearheaded efforts to bring the movie to be shot on location in Winnfield and surrounding areas.

Achievements Acknowledged at School Board Meeting

The school spotlight was a big part of the WPSB monthly meeting for April. Students from Dodson High School and Winnfield Senior High School made an appear-ance to be recognized for their accomplishments.

Principal Renee Johnson from DHS introduced the LCAA group and their sponsor, Kelly Carpenter. Mrs. Carpenter recently took several LCAA members to state convention. They came back with one state officer and nine who qualified for national convention, and one that didn’t qualify for convention because they competed in an event that didn’t send on to nationals, but they did get first in state. The students talked about their projects and placement. They will go on to nationals in Denver, Colorado in July.
