Live Healthy Winn ­­ Groundbreaking project at Recreation Center

The plans for the walking trail at the Winnfield Recreation Center.

On Tuesday, July 13, 2021, several City of Winnfield officials, and other project partners gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony of Phase One of the City of Winnfield’s next big Physically Active Remarkable Citizens (PARC) Project.

“We are excited to finally break ground on this project, it has been a year full of planning and I never thought we would get to this point!” said Parks & Recreation Board Chairman/LSU AgCenter Agent Shannan Chevallier.

Paint the Pig contest

Winnfield has a new attraction located near the post office, a giant pig which will reside there permanently.

Winnfield has become synonymous with hogs since the creation of Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials, and the new statue will liven up the area that’s commonly used for activities on Main Street.

There’s just one problem, it’s blank!

To remedy this, come test your art skills and check out the pig and see what you can do with it.

Teddy Darrell Price chosen as a future long term care leader for national organization

Teddy Darrell Price will be joining AHCA/NCAL’s Future Leaders program, a yearlong program that offers training and guidance for long-term care professionals.

The Louisiana Nursing Home Association (LNHA) announced that Teddy Darrel Price, licensed nursing facility administrator and vice president of operations at Central Management has been chosen by the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted living (AHCA/NCAL) as a national, future leader in long term and post-acute care. Teddy Darrell Price will joining AHCA/NCAL’s Future Leaders program, a yearlong program that offers training and guidance for long-term care professionals.

“Now more than ever, we need to build a pipeline of diverse leaders for our profession,” said Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/NCAL. “Our profession has been through the most challenging year, and we need dedicated, up-and-coming leaders to continue to innovate and improve long term care. We are excited to work with Price and help him develop his career and passion for serving our nation’s seniors.”

A fire on McCloud Street had seven people trapped inside on July 17.

Winnfield Fire Departments rescue seven people trapped in burning building

The remains of the room that people were trapped in on July 17. The Fire Department was able to get everyone out safely.

A dark day turned into a show of extraordinary heroism for the Winnfield Fire Dept. on July 17, as firefighters went inside a burning home to rescue a handicapped man.

Police dispatch alerted the fire department of a residential fire on Mccloud St. with people being trapped inside.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found six people trying to rescue the man and heavy fire and smoke in the area.

Capt. Phillip Wilkerson and FF/OPR. Ben Murphy donned all necessary PPE, went inside where the disabled male was in an adjacent room and dragged him out of the smoke-filled area along with getting the rest of the people out as well. While Det. Roberts sprayed water from the outside of the structure.

Winnfield natives return to community to give back on first annual field day

From left: Josh McAllister, Landry McAllister, Zan Johnson, Keundric Dooley, Donald Alexander and Toni McAllister. Dooley, Johnson and Alexander have returned to Winnfield to throw the first annual Field Day, an event they hope to do for years to come.

Childhood friends and entrepreneurs Keundric Dooley, Zan Johnson and Donald Alexander will be hosting the first Winn Field day program on July 31, with a kick off party on July 30.

They hope to make it an annual event that Winn Parish children can look forward to for years to come.

The field day will host a mini boot camp free of charge, a softball tournament that all can attend and a back to school giveaway where the three will give out free school supplies to children returning back to school.

Winnfield police respond to shooting on Main St.

Winnfield Police officers responded to a shooting in the 600 block of East Main Street late Saturday night. Upon arrival, officers encountered Michael Foshee, who, along with his wife, owns the Main Street Barber Shop. Foshee reportedly received notice of a break-in of the shop from his cell phone while asleep at home. He rushed up to the shop, found the intruder still inside the business and shot him in the leg. He then called police and reported the shooting.

The burglary suspect was identified as Tommy Joe Flowers, Jr, age 20, of Winnfield. He was treated for a minor wound and released by Winn Parish Medical Center personnel where he was then placed under arrest for the charge of Simple Burglary. Flowers was unarmed and has a history of some mental disorders. He was allegedly struck in the face by Foshee after being shot.

Winn schools conclude successful summer learning program

Winn Parish Superintendent, Al Simmons, announced the successful completion of summer learning activities in Winn Schools, “With the exception of Summer Jump Start classes that are still ongoing, we have completed summer learning with very positive results.”

Summer learning activities ran from June 1 through June 24 with classes in session four days each week. Over 500 students were enrolled throughout the parish with an average attendance rate of greater than 85%. “Students were served at each one of our campuses which was a change from previous editions of our summer program,” said Simmons. The summer activities for elementary and middle students consisted of instruction in literacy, mathematics and enrichment activities. High school students
