Winnfield Middle School sees uptick in athletes

Winnfield Middle School sees

District Attorney and head coach for the Winnfield Middle School Track and Field team Chris Nevils is excited for the start of the new season that starts with their first meet in Sept.

“We’ve really seen our team grow this year,” Nevils said. “We probably had twice as many this year than we did this time last year. Nevils attributes the uptick in athletes to the children and their parents wanting them to get out of the house after being cooped up for over a year.

The state of the Earl K. Long Memorial Park

The statue of the iconic Earl K. Long at his memorial park has been over run by weeds and other growth, which has been “embarassing” to some Winnfield residents.

Many bricks, like the one to the left, pose as safety concerns for anyone visiting the park. This brick sticks out right before a stair case, inviting anyone to fall.

The Long’s have become synonymous with not only Winnfield, but Louisiana as a whole.

The Louisiana Political Museum was created in 1987 because of the affect the Long’s had on Louisiana politics, and after the death of Earl K. Long in 1960, his body was buried in the Earl K. Long Memorial Park, and since then a statue was put into the park as an attraction and memorial for the iconic figure.

Lately, however, residents of Winnfield have voiced their displeasure with how the park has been treated.

The Winnfield Middle School was hit the hardest out of all the schools during hurricane Laura last year, but is now up and running with it’s students back into the building.

After the hurricane, much of the building was infested with mold, and the seventh and eight graders had to relocate to the Winnfield Senior High School, due to their area being unsafe to be in.

“In all it costs about $1.6 million to fix the damages,” Mark Maxwell Maintenance Manager of the schools said. “But we had the Cadillac of insurances, and we only had a $100,000 deductible, and a lot of that was paid off with grants and other funding.”

Renovations of Winn Parish school systems are nearly complete after the devastation that Hurricane Laura brought up the parish.

All the schools suffered some damages one way or another, with all of them needing new roofs, and many of them needing interior work due to water damage that was deemed unsafe, with Winnfield Middle School seeing the worst damage and having the 7th and 8th graders transfer to the Winnfield Senior High School building to finish their school year due to excessive water damage.

Parish students return back to school, but so does COVID resurgence

Parish students return back to school, but so does COVID resurgence

Winn Parish Schools started back on Friday, Aug. 6, but this week marks the first full week back for students. The return also marks more changes for schools as COVID-19’s Delta Variant has recently surged throughout the nation

Winn Parish returned back to school this week, and with it COVID-19 has returned back with the new contagious and more deadly Delta variant.

Gov. John Bel Edwards reinstated a state-wide mask mandate on Aug. 2 hat will last until next month, which includes all students from Kindergarten to grade 12 to wear mask while at school, which has caused a heated debate in the parish and the state.

“At this point the issue is not what is my opinion or what is that of our board members,” Superintendent Alfred Simmons said. “Rather the issue is wheter the district must follow the governor’s mandates.

The governor also pointed out that the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) and local health officials recommend that mask be worn in schools.

Louisiana could see another mask mandate after Delta variant goes across state

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards on Friday said he is “seriously considering” the reinstatement of a statewide face mask mandate as his state leads the country for new COVID-19 case growth per capita and is among the least vaccinated states in the nation.

“At this point, it’s not whether we vaccinate or mask. We have to do both,” Edwards said in a news conference. “When the facts change and you learn new things, you have to change your approach. You can’t keep doing the same thing and just hope for a better outcome.”

In May, Edwards lifted his state’s face mask mandate, saying most fully vaccinated residents no longer have to wear them indoors as access to vaccinations expanded. But last week, the governor, along with the Louisiana Department of Health, amended mask guidelines and asked both vaccinated and unvaccinated residents to wear face masks indoors amid the case surge.

First annual Field Day a success

First annual Field Day a success

The first annual Field Day of Winnfield was on July 31 and was a big success.

Childhood friends and entrepreneurs Keundric Dooley, Zan Johnson and Donald Alexander are natives of Winnfield who returned home from Atlanta, Georgia to host a field day open to the public.

The field day consisted of a 30 minute workout akin to what you’d get from their business in Atlanta, E.F.F.E.C.T. FITNESS, a backpack giveaway to children of the parish and a softball tournament.
