The Winn Wellness Clinic received their equipment to store vaccines last week and are ready to give children of Winnfield and Winn Parish their routine vaccines, and also have Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines available to give for anyone of any age.

“We’re so excited to be able to start giving vaccinations,” Angela Thorn, NP in Pediatrics said. “You name it we have it, measles, mumps rubella, any shot that a child needs up until the age of 16 we have.”

With the new equipment the clinic has over 60 vials of over 20 different vaccines that a child might need.

The clinic has been working on receiving the equipment to store vaccines since Oct. of 2020, but due to COVID-19, hurricanes and wintery storms that Louisiana has received within the last year the process has taken longer than usual to get up and running.

“About the time we were ready to get our equipment was the same time the COVID-19 vaccine hit, and everyone rushed the market to get one,” Thorn said.

The City of Winnfield began their new controlled burn initiative Saturday, Sept. 23 as the Winnfield Fire Department and the Winn Parish Fire District 3 joined forces to burn down a condemned building at 407 Brown St.

The new initiative began when the city was looking for ways to beautify the city, and with so many abandoned and condemned buildings in the city, a cheaper resolution was proposed to get rid of the properties and give the city and parish fire departments more hands on training for their fire fighters.

407 Brown St. had been abandoned for over a decade and was not only an eye sore but a safe haven for snakes, roaches and other pests that could make their way to the community.

It was chosen to be the first building this year to kick off the project and the fire departments planned for over a month to do the job safely.

Shop with a Cop is having its annual motorcycle ride fundraiser Saturday, September 25, 2021. Registration is at 9 AM and kickstands up at 10 a.m.

The approximately 110 mile ride will begin at the Winnfield Police Department located at 405 S. Jones St., Winnfield, LA 71483.

After the ride burgers, hotdogs or sausage on a bun will be served at the Winnfield Police Department.

$30 per bike/rider is free/includes lunch. Those not registering or riding may still enjoy lunch for $5.

All proceeds go to the less fortunate children (picked by local schools) who are all given a special amount of money and escorted by a first responder, police official and firemen to pick out their own Christmas gifts.

The Winn Parish Enterprise is proud to announce the winners of our College Pig Skin Pick ‘Em Contest for week three of the season.

First place is Rodney Alderman with 12 picks correct winning $20 and Sarah Cockerham came in a close second with 11 correct winning $10.

A few of the powerhouse teams were nearly upset, like Alabama winning by two points over Florida and Clemson almost losing to an unranked team in a close game.

The game that gave nearly a even 50/50 split on picks this week was 22 ranked Auburn vs 10 ranked Penn State, but Penn state was able to pull out the victory.

Be sure to enter this week’s contest for a chance to win $20, especially since there’s no downside to enter the FREE contest.

Gina Banks, Winnfield native and Personal Accounts Executive of BOM Financial Services in Natchitoches, LA successfully completed the 2021 Leadership School, “Growing our Next Generation of Leaders”, a six-month program that included online course work and five instructor led sessions focused on developing leadership skills and enhancing knowledge in various areas of banking. The program provided by the Louisiana Bankers Association and held in Baton Rouge at The Bankers Center, hosts students from all over the state. The 2021 session marked the 12th year of the program.

The Louisiana Bankers Association is the professional trade association for commercial banks and thrifts in Louisiana. Founded in 1900, the LBA works to provide advocacy, communication, education and other services to its member institutions, and to provide banking information to the general public.

Winn Parish leaders have signed a resolution declaring the parish a “second amendment sanctuary.” While serving no legal function, the resolution means Winn Parish leaders are taking an official stance against the enforcement of laws they perceive as violations of the second amendment.

Winn is the third such parish in Louisiana. They join St. Mary and St. Tammany parishes in doing this. Police jury president Josh McAllister says over 62% of the counties in the country are second amendment sanctuary counties. He says the jury had a lot of support from across the parish to go forward with this resolution, and the residents of Winn Parish want to believe their rights are protected.

Luke Siegel was nine years old when he was seriously injured in a golf cart accident in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas.

It was July 2015, just twenty days after his dad, former Texas Tech men’s tennis coach Tim Siegel, resigned to spend more time with his wife and four children.

Luke suffered from an anoxic brain injury. And despite the doctors’ grim prognosis for Luke’s future, he did show some slow improvement. His fight inspired many people all over the country, even Drew Brees. This was incredibly special to Tim because of his and Luke’s love for the New Orleans Saints.

The entire nation paused this Saturday in remembrance of the 20 year anniversary to one of the darkest times in American history, the attacks that took place on 9/11.

Since the United States formed there have only been two attacks on our home soil, On Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor killing 2,403 Americans and wounding 1,178 others, and nearly sixty years later when suicide bombers hijacked four planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center in New York and one into the Pentagon. The last plane was overcome by the passengers of United 93, who thwarted the bombers plans, even though it costs them their lives, and it crashed in a field in Pennsylvania saving countless live at the Pentagon, that planes target.

Todd Beamer was one of those passengers on United 93, and as the passengers rebelled against the bombers, he shouted his iconic line of “let’s roll” before storming the terrorist.

The Atlanta High School fishing team had a good 2020-2021 showing as they qualified for the state tournament, and they had a good first outing for this season as the snagged first and second place in the Grand Bayou Tournament.

Cody King got first place and big bass of the day, with Denver Blackman reeling in second place.

The FFA Veterinary Science team of Calvin High School placed in the top 25 of the nation to qualify for competing in the national convention in Indianapolis, Indiana on Ooct. 27-30.

The team is made up of Emma Canerday, Kaylie Canerday, Kate Dupree and Gunnar Yocum with Ag instructor Chad Camp. While usually to qualify you have to win the state competition, this year due to COVID-19 the national convention only took the top 25 state winners from the states plus Puerto Rico.

The CHS team were required to do an online event to further cement their place in the competition, and were announced last week that they had made it in.

“The online tests can always be harder,” Yocum said. “In person if I have to identify equipment I can look around, turn it, look at different parts of it, but online I see a picture and I can’t do any of that.”
