Delta Kappa Gamma Holds Monthly Meeting

The Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma held its monthly meeting on February 28, at the Louisiana Political Museum. President Derr called the meeting to order. Assignments for the Spring Style Show were discussed. Gena Hatcher recognized February birthdays. They were Carolyn Lang, Dianne Jordan, and Melissa Trammel. Leah Rustom won the door prize. The Spring Style Show, Magnolias and Pearls, will be Saturday, April 1st, at the Winnfield Senior High School Activity Room at 11:00AM. Tickets may be purchased from DKG members. Twenty-two members were present. They were Wadean Callender, Sheila Causey, Dana Collins, Laure Derr, Gena Hatcher, Theresa Hendrix, Dianne Johnson, Dianne Jordan, Brenda Kelley, Linda Keyes, Carolyn Lang, Tiffany Martin, Susie Miller, Charlotte Page, Leah Rustom, Jaime Schilling, Penny Shelton, Kacie Smith, Amanda Taylor, Pat Thurmon, Melissan Trammell, and Lynn Wooten.

The WPSO hosted an Active Shooter training recently that included officers from the Louisiana State Police providing classroom and demonstrational training. All law enforcement agencies from Winn Parish were invited and encouraged to attend.

Guest speaker for the February 2 1 s t Kiwanis club meeting was Dr. Pete Wardell, DO from Family Eye Care. Family Eye Care has been in Winnfield for a year and business is really good. The people are friendly and welcoming. He and his wife live in Natchitoches and he is partners with Dr. Randall Keator. Dr. Wardell comes to Winnfield 2 days each week and Dr. Keator comes one day each week. Dr. Idell Mitchell is also a partner with Family Eye Care. She does not come to Winnfield.

Mike Miller (a Winnfield native) who worked for the CDC is married to Dr. Wardell’s aunt and because of this after he received his BS degree he did an internship at the CDC doing research on MRSA.

Community Development Works Announces Spring Training

– Community Development Works, a program of The Rapides Foundation, announces its free skillbuilding training schedule for Cenla residents and nonprofits. Classes run from March 21 through May 16.

The Staffbuilders Training Calendar is a free professional development resource for nonprofit staff and volunteers and for people interested in improving their communities. The schedule consists of workshops held in The Rapides Foundation Building in downtown Alexandria and webinars offered online at BigMarker.com/cdworks. Participants do not need to download software to attend the online courses.

Spring trainings cover three topic areas: starting a nonprofit, fund development and internal operations.

Spring class titles are as follows: Start-Up Series for Nonprofits: To Be or Not To Be a 501(c)(3); Introduction to Finding Funders; Keeping It Real – Telling Your Story; Nonprofit Fundraising 101.

28th Annual Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials Dates Set

Time is drawing near for the 28th Annual Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials. This event has grown into one of the biggest events in Winn Parish. This year, it will be held March 20-26 at the Winnfield Fairgrounds. The following is the planned schedule: 20th – Puppy Bay/O&Y

23rd & 24th – Two Dog

Winnfield Middle School BETA and their sponsor, Mandy Wolfe, were present to give an update on the activities that they have been involved in. There are fifty-eight BETA members at WMS, and forty of those went to state convention. Several of those students were present at the WPPJ meeting. They introduced themselves to the jury and talked a little about what they competed in.

Mayor Announces “Mayor’s Service Award”

Mayor Gerald Hamms is excited to announce the Hammy Award that recognize citizens or businesses who go above and beyond in our community. The new award will be considered the highest honor- other than the key to the citythat can be bestowed on our citizens.

Winnfield is a great city, but our greatest asset is our people, Mayor Hamms said. “Through the Mayor’s Hammy Award, we can properly honor those individuals who have strengthened our city in truly extraordinary ways.”

To be considered for the award, nominees must: Currently live in the city of Winnfield Demonstrate a standard of excellence; and Display good moral character.

Nominations are now open and can be submitted through google form. To be considered for an award, nominees must be current City of Winnfield residents. City employees are ineligible to receive the award.

It’s a Win Winn for 4H in Memphis

Winn Parish 4-H represented well at the Mid-South 4-H Food Pantry Competition in Memphis, TN on Feb 25. The senior team won 1st place and the junior team came home with 4th Place out of 11 teams. Mr. Tim Price of the Mid South Food Pantry Competition presented these young ladies with their awards. Congratulations to these young ladies.

Bank of Winnfield & Trust Company would like to congratulate our 50 Year Service Award Winners, E. Delane Adams and Thomas H. Harrel, Jr. Mr. Adams and Mr. Harrel are both former senior officers of Bank of Winnfield & Trust Company, having served since 1972. They continue to serve as Board Members of Bank of Winnfield and were recently recognized for their 50 years of service to the bank. Pictured above (left to right) are President Robert P. Heard, E. Winnfield Tigers Varsity had all cylinders firing on offense on Tuesday, winning big over Jena 14-1 Winnfield Tigers Varsity got things started in the first inning when Tanner Lawson drew a walk, scoring one run.

Winnfield Tigers Varsity scored seven runs in the second inning. Winnfield Tigers Varsity big bats were led by Ryland Brister, Sean Spangler, Bricen Page, Brady Johnson, and Jake Hemphill, who each had RBIs in the inning.

Jacob Whisonant led things off on the pitcher’s mound for Winnfield Tigers Varsity. The pitcher surrendered zero runs on one hit over three innings, striking out four and walking zero.

Zach Barker started the game for Jena. The pitcher surrendered seven runs on five hits over onethird of an inning, walking one. Zeek Brown and Calex Campbell entered the game from the bullpen, throwing three innings and two-thirds of an inning respectively.
