Police chase stretches from Winnfield to Coushatta

The compiled efforts of six law enforcement agencies were successful in apprehending the suspect of a police chase stretching from Winnfield to Coushatta, Monday night. At 9:44 p.m., Winn Parish Sheriff Deputy Underwood spotted a vehicle being driven in a reckless manner on US 167 near Donut Palace.

Winn Parish Fair promises “fun for the whole family”

Day two of the Winn Parish Fair is here. Monday was entry day and registration. Tuesday is full of cooking contests, poultry, sheep and goat judging and exhibits. And you don’t want to miss the fair’s famed Political Stumping with Chairman Matt Miller. But the fair board isn’t ready to slow down yet. Wednesday’s events include the cut flowers contest, baked goods contest, the judging of all remaining exhibits (crops, clothing, canned goods and handicrafts), judging of wood and metal projects, a pet show, the Winn Cattleman Cook-off, and the beef show. And if that wasn’t enough, Midway Rides and Happy World Carnival are offering “Buddy Day”, for which one $30 armband allows you to bring a friend along to ride free!

USDA, Sheriff Jordan sign agreement, new jail to come

Thursday Sept. 24, USDA Rural Development officials and Sheriff Cranford Jordan met to sign a letter of condition to approve funds to build a new $10.2 million jail. USDA Rural Development Natchitoches Area Director Reinette Foster and Community Programs Specialists Tony Matlock and Winnfred Jones visited Sheriff Jordan to sign the letter, which must be understood and argued before final approval of funds to build the new jail. More than $100,000 has been spent on the project already.

Trick riding team to perform Friday

The Winnfield Rodeo has a treat in store for the crowd. Leann Young and Bailor Brown of Cajun Extreme Trick Riders will be performing. Leann has been trick riding professionally for 15 years and rode for the Dolly Parton Dixie Stampede. She now is the teacher of Bailor Brown, teaching Bailor for the past 11 months the art of rodeo trick riding. These two have been performing as a team over the state of Louisiana and will continue moving on to perform in other surrounding states as well.

Proposed Port Deluce Reservoir drinking water project announced

The proposed Port Deluce Reservoir was introduced to the public on Tuesday at a special public announcement. This drinking water project will provide 500 acres and 12.5 miles of shoreline as a drinking water reserve for the City of Winnfield.

LaSalle Corrections to take over Winn Correctional Center, welcomed by Rotary

Winn Correctional Center, the state-owned prison on Gum Springs Road near Atlanta, has been managed privately by Corrections Corporation of America since it opened in 1990 but that management role will soon be taken over by LaSalle Corrections.

Winnfield Police make drug arrest

Winnfield Police Officers arrested a local man on an outstanding warrant for Possession of a Firearm by persons convicted of certain felonies. The arrest warrant had been issued from a previous incident with officers, resulting in the seizing of a .22 caliber handgun.

City Council meeting leads to updates for the city of Winnfield

Last week’s lengthy city council meeting led to the approval of projects that will help Winnfield to keep up with the urbanization happening in other cities. The council voted to accept a bid from E.P. Breaux Construction in order to replace the standing substation that was built 30 years ago.
