Election results for Winn Parish, Oct. 24 primary election

Winn Parish voter turnout was low as eight parish offices were voted on at the primary election Oct. 24. On the ballot were local and statewide seats. The local seats were: Winn Parish Clerk of Court, Winn Parish Coroner and Winn Parish Police Juror Districts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

But with the obesity rate triple what it was a generation ago, we may want to make some adjustments to this yearly ritual. Based on the nutrition labels on popular candies, the average child consumes 3,500 to 7,000 calories worth of treats on Halloween night.

Riders on the Orphan Train comes to Winn Parish Library

Few people today know much about the largest child migration in history. Between 1854 and 1929 over 250,000 orphans and unwanted children were taken out of New York City and given away at train stations across America. Children were sent to every state in the continental United States; the last train went to Sulphur Springs, Texas in 1929. This “placing out” system was originally organized by Methodist minister Charles Loring Brace and the Children’s Aid Society of New York. His mission was to rid the streets and overcrowded orphanages of homeless children and provide them with an opportunity to find new homes.

Police Jury awarded $2.5 million to repair roads, bridges

The Winn Parish Police Jury’s application for $2.5 million in Sales Tax Bonds was approved by the State Bond Commission to aid public roads and bridges in the parish.

He served on the Board for 6 years and for 2 of those years he served as chairman. The board consists of 9 people, 6 are from the insurance industry and 3 are appointed. LIGA is to help the insurance consumer.

Winnfield native first to complete ultramarathon

Danny Frazier of Dallas and Chip Little of Winnfield, La., paddling tandem in a classic aluminum canoe, are the first and only team to finish the “beastly” Tour de la Rivière Rouge, 275 miles from Shreveport-Bossier City to Port Barre.

The Winn Parish Fire Department purchased a used fire truck for Fire District 3 from CCA. The truck was purchased before Winn Parish had an established fire department, and with the closing of the prison it was decided that the Winn Parish Fire Department would purchase the truck from CCA for a total of one US dollar.

Winn Parish Fair has 1,798 exhibits, total of $7,144 premiums

Although the Winn Parish Fair is growing smaller and smaller, the passion its participants feel toward it is holding strong. This year’s fair hosted 1,798 exhibits by 272 exhibitors. Exhibits at the fair can be jellies, jams, handcrafts, animals, or just about anything else one might want to show. Including the cookery contest, the fair released $7,144 total in premiums.

Unrestrained Winnfield Teen Killed in Crash

Late Saturday night, a single vehicle crash killed a teenager from Winnfield, LA that was not wearing his seat belt. Two unrestrained passengers, in his vehicle, also were injured. Troopers responded to the crash around 10:15 p.m., which occurred on Gum Springs Road near US Hwy 84. The crash involved a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by Felipe De Jesus Guerrero Jr. (O/M 19 yrs).
