Mrs. Page's kindergarten class visited the Winn Parish Library during a wonderful field trip on Oct. 20.

It was a special weekend for a local golfer in Winnfield. Pine Ridge Country Club hosted its 55th Annual Club Championship over the September 14-15th weekend and a familiar champion was crowned his record 9th Club Championship. Chase Hemperley outlasted Micah Hubbard (2nd Place -1 Under 216) and Rick Hanna (3rd Place +1 Over 217) for the title finishing with a 54 hole total of -5 Under Par 211. Chase had previously been tied with Rick Hanna for the most PRCC titles, standing at 8 championships.

Riders On The Orphan Train comes to the Winn Parish Library Thursday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. The multimedia presentation is free and designed to engage audiences of all ages as well as to inform, inspire and raise awareness about the littleknown Orphan Train.

Winn Parish voter turnout was low as eight parish offices were voted on at the primary election Oct. 24. On the ballot were local and statewide seats. The local seats were: Winn Parish Clerk of Court, Winn Parish Coroner and Winn Parish Police Juror Districts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Few people today know much about the largest child migration in history. Between 1854 and 1929 over 250,000 orphans and unwanted children were taken out of New York City and given away at train stations across America. Children were sent to every state in the continental United States; the last train went to Sulphur Springs, Texas in 1929. This “placing out” system was originally organized by Methodist minister Charles Loring Brace and the Children’s Aid Society of New York. His mission was to rid the streets and overcrowded orphanages of homeless children and provide them with an opportunity to find new homes.
