Atlanta High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) had 35 students in grades 8-12 participate in the annual FBLA District 3 Leadership Conference. Atlanta High School and Caity Horne, District 3 Vice President, organized and planned this year’s conference. Marisa Mercer, a junior at AHS, was elected the 2016-2017 District 3 Vice President and will be installed as a state officer at the State Leadership Conference.

Waskom, Brown & Associates, LLC celebrated the opening of its new office located at 200 North Church St with a special ribbon cutting ceremony recently. Founded in 1999, Waskom, Brown & Associates is a Natchitoches based Accounting Firm committed to offering innovative solutions to the local communities accounting, tax, payroll, and financial service's needs. Winnfield Mayor Kiah Beville, several community leaders and the Chamber of Commerce helped commemorate the occasion.

The 2015 Winn Parish Student of the Year winners were announced at a reception held Monday, Feb. 1 by the Winn Parish School Board. Twelve students from parish schools in grades five, eight and twelve were nominated for the honor of Winn Parish Student of the Year 2015. At the reception, each student was introduced by their principal and recognized for their hard work and achievement as outstanding Winn students.

After serving the Winn community for 38 years, Winn Parish Medical Center Chief Executive Officer, Pat Flowers, is retiring. A Registered Nurse, Flowers graduated from Charity School of Nursing in New Orleans, La. in 1973 and has been serving others since. She worked as an RN for four years before moving to Winnfield. While working full-time at WPMC, she was a part-time student at NSULA working on her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Dr. Jane Griffin of WSHS accepted a $500 Education Alliance Grant from Angie Chandler of Country Girl Exxon. The grant from the ExxonMobil Education Alliance Program will support WSHS in math and science curriculum. The program is designed to provide ExxonMobil retailers with the opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through education grants to local schools. Angie Maxwell, Blair Professor of Southern Studies and associate professor of political science at the University of Arkansas, was awarded the national V. O. Key Award for Best Book in Southern Politics. She and her book, The Indicted South: Public Criticism, Southern Inferiority, and the Politics of Whiteness (University of North Carolina Press, 2014), were honored last month, at the Southern Political Science Association national meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Four teachers were honored at the annual Martin Luther King Day celebration for their service as members of the Pinecrest School faculty. The teachers, Mrs. Betty Ashley, Mrs. Everlene Gibson, Mrs. Inell Flowers and Mrs. Alma Hobdy, were honored and received plaques to commemorate their service to the children who attended school at Pinecrest.

We’re asking Winnfield residents and visitors to complete a survey created by LSU graduate student, Julie Thomas, to improve tourism in Winnfield.

Thomas is working with the Winnfield Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Incorporated to measure and improve the rate of tourism in Winnfield as a part of her masters project as a graduate student at LSU in Baton Rouge. By taking the time to participate, you can be a part of the tourism project in Winnfield.
