Not even torrential downpour could stop the Winnfield Chamber of Commerce and Tourism from honoring local businesspersons and businesses for their commitment to service to the Winn community on Feb. 23. Four awards were presented: Winnfield Rotary Club was named Volunteer of the Year, Pat Flowers was named Businessperson of the Year, the Winnfield Animal Clinic was named Business of the Year, and First Methodist Church was awarded the Myrtis Allen Spirit Award.

Possibly Winnfield’s oldest resident, Aline Williams turned 100 years-old. She lives in Winnfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and says she has no advice on how to live to be 100 years-old.

Louisiana State Superintendent John White accompanied Winn Parish Superintendent Steve Bartlett to Atlanta High School where Superintendent White was able to experience the atmosphere and dedication of a rural school. After discussing future plans with several students, he and Superintendent Bartlett watched as senior Caity Horne read her recently published book Monster to the Pre-K and kindergarten classes.

The Winnfield City Council meeting took a lively turn Feb. 16 with the discussion of the possible consolidation of city departments. Currently, only four of seven department head positions are filled in the city. Councilman Gerald Hamms brought up the issue hoping to have it resolved by filling the remaining three positions, but Mayor Beville has other plans. He plans to consolidate the departments to create five department heads, rather than seven.

The Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame Induction banquet is being held outside of Winnfield for the first time since 1993. Due to a lack of state appropriation funds, Carolyn Phillips, the Executive Director of the Hall of Fame, said the museum didn’t have the funds to hold the banquet at the museum this year.

A Winnfield man was pronounced dead following a crash involving his motorcycle and a school bus on Feb. 3. Winnfield Police are investigating the accident that occurred around 3 p.m., police said.

Five 4-H members, three adult leaders and two fashion board members attended the 2016 State Fashion Board Boot Camp held at Camp Grant Walker on January 29-31, 2016. This was an action packed eventful week-end. The attendees with the assistance of the board members and the leaders made a t-shirt tote bag, pillowcase, flat iron saver, a headband and participated in a community service project.
