Taking a look back at the year in Winn Parish 

Another year has come and gone in Winn Parish, so it must be time for the annual Enterprise Year In Review. Here are some headlines that made 2015 a year to remember in Winn Parish:

Rick Pounders, of Key West, Fla., said he’s “on a mission from Jesus” traveling the country and letting people know what it takes to get to heaven. After being shot in Miami, Fla., Pounders drove himself to the hospital where he nearly died from his wound. This experience, he said, opened up his eyes.

The Krewe of Kingfish will be hosting its 24th annual Mardi Gras Parade in downtown Winnfield on January 16th at 4:00 pm. The theme of this year’s parade is “Once Upon a Mardi Gras”. The Krewe would like to extend an invitation to all civic organizations, schools, businesses, groups and families to join in this year’s fun. In conjunction with the parade this year and the theme, the Krewe will sponsor a costume contest at 3:00 at the Earl K. Long. Dress up as your favorite fairy tale prince, princess, villain or character and join us for some fun.

Playing with a handgun resulted in death of 25yearold 

On Dec. 28 at 2:06 p.m., officers of the Winnfield Police Department responded to a 911 call at 1411 South Jones St., Apartment 17, of a person with a gunshot wound. The victim, identified as Gerelle Kimble, age 25, of Winnfield, was taken to the Winn Parish Medical Center Emergency Room by private car where he was initially treated and transferred to Rapides Regional in Alexandria, La. Kimble later died from the wound.

The Winn Parish Police Jury met Dec. 29 for a special called meeting to discuss the proposed 2016 budget. The following is an overview of the estimated revenues, expenses and balances of the budget as it was passed:

Quilts For Kids is a program made up of volunteer quilters who transform fabrics into patchwork quilts that comfort children in need, and the Winnfield Quilts For Kids club is responsible for the smiles on 23 faces this holiday season.

The body of Johnathan D. Cofield, age 35, was discovered Tuesday, Dec. 22 at about 1:30 p.m. Cofield’s body was found approximately 300 yards southwest of the recreation center in Kisatchie National Forest.

The final Police Jury meeting of 2015 was held Monday, Dec. 21. Mr. Perry Holmes, Road Superintendent, said in the road update that the recent rain has been “putting a damper on things,” but the road crews are patching potholes each day as well as putting rocks down.

Winn Parish schools received a very welcome early Christmas present on Dec. 17 when the Louisiana Department of Education announced that all schools in the district had either kept or improved their school performance scores for the 2014-15 school year. The LDE released their annual school performance scores on Thursday, Dec. 17, a process in which public schools across the state receive a letter grade for their performance during a nine-month calendar school year.
