In today’s Winn Parish Enterprise newspaper, on Pages 11 and 12, you’ll find a list of 157 Winn Parish residents owed money by the state of Louisiana.

The state currently has millions of dollars it wants to return to its rightful owners, but first it has to locate those to whom money is owed, according to State Treasurer John M. Schroder Sr.

The Winn Parish Retired Teachers Association enjoyed an Oct. 15 luncheon meeting at the Sheriff’s Rifle Range, hosted by Sheriff Cranford Jordan.

He commented that he enjoyed being with “law-abiding, honest folks.”

Winn Parish voters don’t have a very long ballot facing them for the November 16 Gubernatorial General Election, but there are a couple of local races of interest, a senator, a police juror and a tax proposition in the City of Dodson. In addition there are two statewide runoff races, Governor and Secretary of State.

State Senator Jim Fannin, of Jonesboro, will meet Jay Morris in a run-off for the Senate District 35th seat. Fannin, the incumbent, led all candidates in voting with 12,559 votes (39%) while Morris, of Monroe, finished second with 11,782 votes (36%). A third candidate in the race, Matt, received 58,154 votes in the race.

Senate District 35 covers parts of Winn, Grant, Rapides, Jackson, Lincoln and Ouachita parishes.

Fannin carried the Winn Parish vote with 67 percent or 704 votes while Parker had 183 votes here and Morris received

On October 8, 2019, the Winnfield City Council held their October monthly meeting. After the opening prayer and Pledge of Allegiance. The council voted to amend a few different parts of the agenda. Under Old Business-Non-Action items, the council removed from the agenda motions to adopt Ordinance #16 of 2019-Annexation of Hanson Property and to adopt Ordinance #17 Amending Section 18:1 Psych Exam. The council also added motions under Non-Action items that address the donation of vehicles to the Winnfield Police Department. All amendments to the agenda and the agenda as amended passed unanimously.

Before conducting any business, Lt. Curry of the Winnfield Police Department addressed the council. Lt. Curry provided information on the status of a blood drive to help Reserve Officer Bobby Poisso who is currently receiving treatment for cancer. The blood drive was held on Friday, October 11.

After a two-day criminal enforcement detail, 84 individuals have been arrested and are off the streets of Rapides and Winn Parishes.

On Wednesday, October 9, 2019, and on Thursday, October 10, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police, in conjunction with numerous other law enforcement agencies, conducted a criminal enforcement detail in Rapides and Winn Parishes. The objective was to identify and apprehend individuals engaged in criminal activity.

For the office of Governor, incumbent John Bel Edwards received 47% of the vote. Eddie Rispone saw the next highest vote count, receiving 27% of the vote. Rispone edged out Ralph Abraham who received 24% of the vote. All other candidates for governor received roughly 1% of the vote. For Lieutenant Governor, William “Billy” Nungesser was elected over Willie Jones. Nungesser received 68% of the vote. For Secretary of State, Kyle Ardoin received the highest vote count, taking 41% of the vote. However, there will be a runoff with Ardoin facing “Gwen” Collins-Greenup who received 34% of the vote. For Attorney General, “Jeff” Landry was elected after receiving 66% of the vote. John M. Schroder was elected over Derrick Edwards and Teresa Kenny for the office of Treasurer after receiving 60% of the vote. Michael Strain was elected for Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry receiving 57% percent of the vote.

Six candidates, three Republicans, two Democrats and one Independent, all are asking for your vote to be Louisiana Governor on the ballot Saturday.

In all there are seven statewide races for parish voters to decide that drew the attention of roughly two-dozen candidates. In addition, there are four constitutional amendments proposed. All voters in the parish will cast votes in these races and issues.

Voters will cast their ballots for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, State Treasurer, Commissioner of Agriculture and Commissioner of Insurance.

Only the races for Attorney General and Commissioner of Insurance are guaranteed to be decided on Saturday, Oct. 12 because there are just two candidates in each of those.

While the state elections have had candidates “dropout” of the race, local elections haven’t had any.

There are four seats in the state house for districts that represent parts of Winn Parish. Only the House of Representative Seat in District 13 was unopposed.

State Representative Jack McFarland, who serves all of Jackson parish and parts of Bienville, Ouachita and Winn parishes, was elected for a second term without opposition.

Seeking the office of House of Representative from District 22 are Gabe Firment (R) and Carl Ray Lasyone (R). Both men are from Grant Parish. Firment is from Pollock while Lasyone is from Colfax. Lasyone currently serves on the Grant Parish Police Jury.
