Winn Parish Students to Receive Free Lunch, Second Year

Winn Parish School Board today announced an amendment to its policy for serving meals to students under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for the 2019-2020 school year. All students will be served breakfast at no charge at the following sites:

Atlanta High School

Calvin High School

Dodson High School

Winnfield Primary School

Library Summer Reading Program Ends August 3

The staff at the Winn Parish Library has had a “BLAST” with this year’s theme, “A Universe of Stories.” We hope all the participants enjoyed the performers, crafts/activities, prizes and most importantly reading great books. However, all great missions must end and return to earth at some point.

Sheriff Announces the Following Arrest for Winn Parish

During arecent investigation by a WPSO narcotics detective,pills were purchased that, after being tested at the Louisiana State Crime Lab, were found to contain Fentanyl (a deadly drug) instead of the drug that the pill was marked to be.

As a result of that investigation,on the morning of July 19,2019,Winn Parish Sheriff’s Deputies and Agents of Louisiana Probation and Parole served three felony arrest warrants at 210

Saline Lake Drawdown Improvement Requires Permit

The Winn Parish Police Jury / Saline Lake Game and Fish Preserve Commission and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced the scheduled drawdown of Saline Lake, in Natchitoches and Winn parishes, starting June 3, 2019. The primary purpose is to control the growth of giant Salvinia during the upcoming summer months when growth potential is at its highest.

Central Management Company Wins Employee Approved Award from NRC Health

Central Management is one of only 20 Independent Living, Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing organizations that has earned the remarkable distinction from NRC Health of being an Employee Approved Facility. Winners were selected according to the results from NRC Health’s 2018 Employee Experience Survey.

To qualify, organizations must have a high percentage of respondents willing to recommend their locations as places to work. In today’s competitive workforce, it is vitally important that employees feel that their voices are heard, thus contributing to company loyalty and job satisfaction.

LEPA Wades Through Major Electrical Industry Changes for 17 Cities, Including Winnfield

The electrical industry has seen radical change, and that change has also greatly impacted the Louisiana Energy and Power Authority (LEPA), a unique agent of 17 municipal electrical systems. LEPA is now undergoing another change as its longtime General Manager Cordell Grand retired on June 30, and Assistant General Manager Kevin Bihm takes the helm.

Reflecting on 35 years at LEPA and 18 of those years as General Manager, Grand said LEPA has worked through three major shifts in purchasing electrical energy supply during his tenure, and the last, to membership in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) in December of 2013 was the most dramatic change in its history and has had continued implications.

3rd Annual Back to School Bash Set

The Winn Parish Healthy Initiative Coalition is happy to present the 3 rd Annual Back to School Bash set for August 1, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church of Winnfield, located at 300 Main Street. It will be from 10 a.m. to 1p.m.

The Back to School Bash is held each year to assist children of Winn Parish with their back to school needs. Each child is given a game card that resembles a Bingo card. They visit each station and participate in an activity that the vendor has. Then their game card is stamped, and they continue to the next station. When the card is filled up, the child receives a lunch and a bag of school supplies they can use at home. Many of the vendors are resources for parents who may need help not only getting their child ready for school but also for things throughout the year. Community service organizations also participate and provide information on the services they can offer to the community. Door prizes are given away throughout the event.

July 3, 2019, Senator Bill Cassidy, along with more elected officials, were hosted by Autumn Leaves Nursing Home in Winnfield. Cassidy met with the residents and staff, along with a tour of the facility. This was an effort to learn more about the nursing facility profession and the exceptional quality are that is provided.

As a physician, Senator Cassidy has spent much of his life improving the lives of his patients and as our senator; he is passionate about making America’s healthcare system both sustainable and the best in quality. In 2017, Autumn Leaves was nationally recognized for earning a 2017 Silver—Achievement in Quality Award through the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program. Based on the Baldrige Excellence Framework less than 1% of America’s Nursing facilities earn this prestigious award annually.

On Tuesday, June 25, at the installation banquet of 2019, several members and volunteers were recognized and thanked for service and commitment to the Winnfield Lions Club in reaching higher levels of humanitarian service. Outgoing president Mike Kennedy expressed appreciation for all the hard work carried out in 2018-2019 to further the goals of Lionism.
