As David Stare’s 80th birthday approached, he began deliberating what would be the best way to celebrate. Two things were certain: David’s two most distinct interests were food and jazz. David decided that, as there is no better place than Louisiana to celebrate food and jazz, his birthday weekend had to be there. That wasn’t the only deciding factor, however, as Louisiana had another tug on David’s heart: family roots.

In September of 2019, David, along with his wife and daughters, got on a plane and headed for the Bayou State, temporarily leaving Dry Creek Vineyard that David founded in Healdsburg, California, 48 years ago. Once his feet were on the ground in “the Boot,” David met up with a couple from Boston: his sister, Mary Wilkinson, and her husband. Unfortunately, their other brother Fred, from Chicago, was unable to join.

David and Mary couldn’t wait to explore the state, but their initial exploration had nothing to do with Mardi Gras, the Saints, crawfish, or even LSU. Rather, in the words of Mary, “Of course, the first stop on our itinerary couldn’t be anywhere other than Winnfield.”
