Residents of Winn Parish may have noticed a “new” fixture attached to the Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame. Now connecting the two museum buildings is the gate that formerly donned the back entrance to the Earl K. Long Memorial Park.

Under previous administration, the City of Winnfield made the decision to have the gates removed and discarded. However, the Executive Director of the museum, Carolyn Phillips, determined that this would not be the end for a piece of Louisiana history.

Apparently the Earl K. Long Park had been the target of a lot of vandalism, so a former mayor oversaw the removal of the gates. They were headed to the dump, but Phillips objected, claiming that the gates are state property from a state park, and “you cannot destroy state property.” Phillips went to the mayor’s office to let them know, “If you don’t want them, we are a state museum, so bring them to us.” The City of Winnfield obliged, and delivered the gates to the museum, albeit via dump truck.
