DARE Officer Jones Speaks at Recent Rotary Meeting

Article Image Alt Text

When DARE first came to schools across the country, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program aimed at teaching young children to “Say NO to Drugs.” However, the focus has changed local DARE officer Anna Jones told the Rotary Club of Winnfield on May 17.

As it turned out, the more children learned about drugs, the more likely they were to being exposed to them. As a result, DARE personnel now go into schools as officers to help children develop a positive relationship with law enforcement. There were 403 students who took part in Winn’s DARE program this year just ended.

“In the past, we were unintentionally showing kids what they could do,” Jones explained. “Now we teach about choices, consequences, responsibilities. How to be safe. Now we talk about alcohol, tobacco, bullying. How to respond. How to avoid situations.”

Freddie Shows speaks to Kiwanis Club, Tuesday, April 25

Article Image Alt Text

Freddie Shows, general manager and part-owner of Johnny’s Pizza, spoke to the Kiwanis club Tuesday, April 25, 2017. Shows has been self-employed since the age of 19. He has also been a preacher at the Jonesboro Church of Christ for 35 years. He opened a saw shop in Winnfield in 1985, an outsider from Jonesboro. After closing the saw shop he built several houses, built cabinets, and drove a truck. The Winnfield Johnny’s Pizza is store #4 for Shows and his partners. The others are in Jonesboro, Pineville and Alexandria. The Winnfield franchise was purchased at the same time as the Jonesboro franchise 6 ½ years ago so it has been in the works for a while. However, after Jonesboro they put in at Pineville and Alexandria because they thought there would be more business in a bigger place.
