Rotary Hears of Mission to Haiti

Rev. Steven Smithson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Winnfield, spoke Aug. 30 to the Rotary Club of Winnfield about his summer mission to “Hope Rising” in Haiti with a dozen other church members. Poverty in the country is so stark that Americans who have not traveled to a third world country can hardly comprehend. While in Arkansas, Smithson became aware of a fledging outpost of hope in Port au Prince for children run by a Christian couple. What began as an orphanage grew into a Christian school and a church on a 14-acre compound and supporters are now hoping to build a medical clinic there. Fundraising with be starting point. The pastor said his group arrived with the intent to do anything they could to help Hope Rising and were fulfilled through their work. Rotarians who are also members of FBC stand with the pastor.
