Jesse Dyson Speaks to Kiwanis Club, September 25, 2017

Article Image Alt Text

Kiwanian Jesse Dyson was the speaker for the September 25th Kiwanis club meeting. After putting in a plug for The Family Jewel Box, Dyson spoke on the History of Louisiana.

Louisiana has been under 10 flags since 1541. The area was first explored by De Soto for Spain. Later it was claimed by France under King Louis XIV and named Louisiana for the king. Control went back and forth between France and Spain. In 1800 the US nearly went to war with France (Napoleon) over the territory. Thomas Jefferson offered to purchase the land rather than fight over it. He particularly wanted New Orleans and Florida. In 1803 the United States purchased the Louisiana territory for $15 million. They paid $11.25 million and forgave a $3.25 million debt. This included the whole territory and worked out to 3 cents per acre. It took until 1826 to pay off the debt because they had to borrow the money. It put James Monroe in debt for the rest of his life.

Rotary Hears of Mission to Haiti

Article Image Alt Text

Rev. Steven Smithson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Winnfield, spoke Aug. 30 to the Rotary Club of Winnfield about his summer mission to “Hope Rising” in Haiti with a dozen other church members. Poverty in the country is so stark that Americans who have not traveled to a third world country can hardly comprehend. While in Arkansas, Smithson became aware of a fledging outpost of hope in Port au Prince for children run by a Christian couple. What began as an orphanage grew into a Christian school and a church on a 14-acre compound and supporters are now hoping to build a medical clinic there. Fundraising with be starting point. The pastor said his group arrived with the intent to do anything they could to help Hope Rising and were fulfilled through their work. Rotarians who are also members of FBC stand with the pastor. From left are Jerry Price, Delane Adams, Rev. Smithson and Don Causey.

Rev. Steven Smithson speaks to Kiwanis Club

Article Image Alt Text

Kiwanian Joe Evans (pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church) introduced his guests Mrs. Evie Sue Jones and Mrs. Mary Ann Roberts. He invited them to the meeting to hear guest speaker Rev. Steven Smithson (pastor of First Baptist Church) speak abouthis mission trips to Haiti. Rev. Smithson also brought Glen Austin, who went on the mission trip, to share some of his experience.

Rev. Smithson shared that Haiti is rife with corruption, political overthrows, etc. which results in immense poverty. He shared that when you enter a third world country there is a smell, taste and sight that gives you a very real sense of poverty. Haiti is on an island. Half of the island is the Dominican Republic which is very upscale and where people go for vacations. The other half is Haiti which is very poverty stricken.
