Winnfield Kiwanis Club Installation Banquet Held October 16

The Winnfield Kiwanis club held its annual Installation Banquet, Monday, Oct. 16th at the First Presbyterian Church. Outgoing President Rita James called the meeting to order. After the pledge, invocation, defining statement, and prayer James welcomed everyone and introduced guests. The group then enjoyed a delicious meal catered by Linda Peavy. After the meal, President James presented special recognitions and awards.

The Legion of Honor Honorees were Dr. Jerry Williams with 55 years of service, Dr. Bill Gaddis with 40 years of service, Jimmy Dale Zimmerman with 25 years of service and Margaret Coon with 21 years of service with Terrific Kids.

4-H Recipes

Bailor Brown earned the Participation Award in the Winn Parish Fair 4-H Cookery Contest Beef Division: Main Dish. She treated the judges to a Hobo Dinner that can be prepared ahead of time for cooking at home, or over a campfire.

Recipes from the Winn Parish Fair 4H Cookery Contest

The judges of the 2017 Winn Parish Fair 4-H Cookery Contests were treated to a variety of dishes, made by local students, and were quite impressed with the culinary skills of the young participants.

Lillian Rainwater from Calvin High School prepared the following dish. Her Cajun Shrimp and Grits earned a blue ribbon in the Louisiana Seafood Competition.

LSMA Students Have Opportunity to Stay Active with Life in Motion Program

Jonathan Rivera has taken his love of physical activity that began when he was a little boy watching his grandmother rise each day at 5 a.m. to work out and introduced Life in Motion to students and members of the faculty and staff at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts.

“My vision is to jumpstart a health promotion program that will increase the value and importance of physical activity on academic success for the student body prior to transitioning to college and beyond,” said Rivera, a residence life intern at LSMSA and a graduate assistant in fitness and wellness at Northwestern State University. “This extends beyond that holistically to other dimensions of wellness.

WGHA Officers Meeting Held

Thursday, October 5, 2017, officers of Winn Genealogy and Historical Association met at El Patio. Great food was ordered, and Delores McFarland asked the blessing. On the agenda was a discussion of finding a new editor for our journal. Our editor, Rhoda Barbee, is resigning because of health reasons. We appreciate Rhoda and the work she did for WGHA. We wish her good health and hope to see her and her family at future WGHA meetings. Future fundraisers were discussed. We will table all those ideas until our January 20, 2018 meeting.

Margaret Coon spoke to the Kiwanis club, Monday, October 9th about the Terrific Kid program. Winnfield Kiwanis started the Terrific Kid program in February of 1996 with a pilot program at the Intermediate School. In April the program expanded to 4th and 5th grade at Atlanta, Calvin and Dodson and in the fall it expanded to Kindergarten through 5th grade at all parish schools. Since the Intermediate school closed the Terrific Kids program is for grades Kindergarten through 4th grade. The criteria of a Terrific Kid is respect for teachers and peers, doing classwork and homework in a timely manner, attend school regularly, show respect for school property and have an enthusiastic, positive attitude.
