On May 6th, a standing room only audience met at the Winn Parish Library to hear Dr. Terry Jones speak. Dr. Jones brought a very informative and interesting programto many friends, relatives, WGHA members and others wanting to learn more about Winn Parish’s past. Saturday, July 15, 2017, the WGHA will meet in their meeting room at 301 Main Street,

Winnfield. Historian Justin Cotten will be sharing about his work in Winn Parish cemeteries. Several members will share their research and activities.

William and Brandi Martin of Calvin are proud to announce the wedding of their daughter, Hallie Brooke Martin to Steven Lane Williams. Steven is the son of Becky Williams Cheatwood and the late Gerald Williams of Saline.

The wedding will be on July 15, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Calvin Baptist Church. Friends and family are welcome to attend.

Atlanta High School students participated in the Jump Start Summer program sponsored by the Winn Parish School Board. Students were trained and earned credentials including OSHA-10, Customer Service and Sales, SP2 Mechanical Safety and Pollution Prevention, CPR and AED, and FEMA-IS-700. LaSalle Community Action Assn., Inc is announcing the availability of funds dedicated to assist eligible low income households with their energy payments. All applications are taken on a first come, first served basis. For this one day only. Telephone appointments will be taken beginning the 3rd Thursday of each month from 9:00 am until 11:00 a.m. until all funds are exhausted. To schedule an appointment you may call: 318-389-4810. An eligible household is one whose total income is at or below the levels listed in the table below and who have not received a previous benefit within the past six months. Applicants must provide, at a minimum, the following documentation at the time the application is taken: 1. Copies of each household member’s social security number 2. Proof of income of all household members at 18 or older 3. a copy of an energy bill *must be within the last 12 months) 4. a photo ID of the applicant 5. copy of lease for all clients living in housing. 6.

On June 3, 2017 Termica L. Jackson celebrated her 42nd birthday with God, family and friends.

She enjoyed becoming 42 years old and was excited. For our guest speaker, all the way from Quitman, LA, our Co/Pastor Prophetess Theresa Hall Lard. She brought a dynamic message from the spirit of God. Our gospel group guest was the Anointed Voices of God-“Jody & Company” and I really adore them in their walk with God. Prayer minister Bobby Evans Old and New Testament, James Carter and Deacon Marlon G. Jackson; the dynamic encouragement from Sister Kristal Marshall, a warm welcome by Sis. Lorine Flagg; respond by Sis. Mary Jewitt was on fire and a great and awesome tribute from the Jackson Family, my son Marlon, daughter Gloria and my grandkids Zemeriah and Amirah was pretty awesome-I’m Chasing After You.

Bro. Ronny and Sis. Gail Taylor will be celebrating their 50thWedding Anniversary on Saturday, July 1, 2017. Their children will be honoring them with a reception on that day from 2-5 p.m. at Glory way Church Fellowship Hall. As school was ending, members of the Pilot Club of Winnfield were thinking about the safety of our children over the summer. Pilots and their Brainminder Buddies visited every first and second grade class in our parish to present puppet shows on how to play safe and play smart. Each of the cute, fuzzy puppets had a safety tip for the children. They told the boys and girls to protect their brains by wearing a helmet when riding a bike, a seatbelt when in the car, a life jacket in a boat, to look both ways before crossing astreet, and to dial 911 in the event of fire or finding a gun.

Gail Shelton, artist andowner of the Pea Patch, spoketo the Kiwanis club, Monday,June 12, 2017. Mrs. Sheltonspoke to the club about colored pencil drawing. She is amember of the Colored Pencil Society of America. Colored pencils that artist use are not the same as the colored pencils that we used as children. She learned about these colored pencils when she took some art students to Northeast La. University (now known as ULM). There are 2 kinds-anoil-based lead and a wax-based (prisma color). Colored pencil drawings are done on paper. You can use the wax-base on canvas but you have to use a solvent.

Shelton does her work from photography. She used apower point to show various pictures that she has done and how she did them. As shes howed a picture she would tell where the photograph was taken and she would explain how she was able to recreate the picture. Colored pencil drawing is tedious and time-consuming.

When it comes to estate planning, almost everyone takes steps to ensure that the big-ticket items such as the house, car, properties and investments go to those people that the benefactors desires.

But what about all the little things around the house that have been accumulated over a lifetime? Who gets Grandma’s yellow pie plate?

This was the question that 4-H agent Karen Shirley put to Rotarians when she spoke to the Winnfield club May 31. This concept in planning was developed by the University of Minnesota Extension as one of the life skills offered to young students. Mrs. Shirley pointed out that, “4-H is more than cooking and cows. A lot that we do centers on worthwhile life skills.”

NATCHITOCHES – Twenty-five Northwestern State University students have been selected as members of The Purple Jacket Club, one of the university’s oldest honorary service organizations. Students are selected based on scholarship, outstanding achievement, exceptional leadership and high ideals.
