Denise Verret Thompson, age 60 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed from this life to a better life at 3am Saturday morning, December 18, 2021, with her husband Bill by her side.

Born Tuesday, February 21, 1961 in New Orleans, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her mother, Sandy Sanders Verret, brother, Roger Dale Verret; and 3 fur babies, Gretchen, Dixie, and Jack,

Those left to cherish her memory include her father, Nicholas Felix Verret, Sr; husband, Bill Thompson; daughter, Brittany Osborn (Steve); son, Alex Thompson; bonus daughters, Jennifer Johnson (Mike), Tina Thompson, and Rebecca Crowe (Doug); brother, Rev. Nick Verret, Jr. (Angela); 11 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The family received friends on Monday, December 20, 2021, at Southern Funeral Home, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and again on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at Southern Funeral Home, from 9:00 AM until time of services.

Mr. Quinton Howard Arnold, age 79 of Baton Rouge, Louisiana passed away on Friday, December 24, 2021.

Born Monday, January 19, 1942 in Dess, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Leach Arnold; parents, James Howard Arnold and Reba Busby Arnold; siblings, Dollis Bustemento and Glen Arnold.

Quinton was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved his Lord and his family very much. In his spare time, he loved to fish. When he was able, he was always up for a basketball game. He will be forever loved by his family and the many friends he made through his time here.

Mackie (Mac) Pete Carpenter

Mackie (Mac) Pete Carpenter, age 74, of Natalia, Texas, passed away peacefully in his home outside of San Antonio, on November 24, 2021.

Mac was born in Winn Parish on February 17, 1947 to Beatrice and Austin Carpenter. He attended Calvin High School and was an outstanding athlete and active in school clubs.

He retired as a Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force after 22 years of service and a veteran of the Vietnam War. Mac grew up in Calvin, LA and his life led him to many adventures and stories far from the woods and Dugdemona Swamp of Calvin, LA that he loved. He was stationed in Japan, where he met, fell in love, and married Kazuko Komaki Carpenter, to whom he was married for four decades until her passing in 2011. His daughters, Michelle and LaDonna, were born in Japan, and together, the family immigrated to Wichita Falls, TX in 1974. His sons Jeffery and Justin were later born in Louisiana and Texas, respectively.

Mrs. Sybil James Guilliams, age 95 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2021.

Born Friday, August 6, 1926 in Verda, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by husband, Buford of 61 years; a daughter Regina; parents, Charles and Veva James; 3 sisters, Thelma Horne (Bill), Hazel Roberts, and Nell Poisso; 5 brothers, Casey, Jessie, Arthur (Dude), Huey and Troy.

She was a retired school bus driver, a long time member of South Winnfield Baptist Church where she served as church clerk, Sunday school teacher, church secretary, choir member, Ladies Prayer group, W.M.U., and worked several years at Food Pantry.

She loved her Pastor and her church family, to cook, work in her yard, do needle point....but most of all she loved to travel.

Born Friday, January 13, 1950 in Hodge, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by parents, Pearl May Slaughter Ashely and Louis Ashley; brother, Louis Ashely; and husband, Roy Maggio,

Mrs. Maggio was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. She had many hobbies that she enjoyed including, interior decorating, flower gardening, and crafting. Holidays were special to Mrs. Maggio. She loved spending time with her grandchildren who knew her for baking cookies and brownies.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Tracy Kelley; sons, Ross Maggio and Kelly Maggio; grandchildren, Sam Maggio, Hannah Maggio, Jyssie Kelley, Manny Kelley, Autumn Maggio, Sebashtian Ashmore, and Jasmine Maggio; great grandchildren, Gunner Maggio, and Riley Kinder; brother Leroy Ashely (Judy); special close family, Jerry Williams, Rose Ashmore, and Brooklyn Bialey.

Bobby Gene Jennings

Mr. Bobby Gene Jennings, age 86 of Goldonna, Louisiana passed away on Friday, November 12, 2021.

Born Friday, May 17, 1935 in Marthaville, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his parents, L. Roy Jennings and Mattye Blanche Knott Jennings; granddaughter, Amanda Kay McAllister.

Mr. Jennings was self-employed as a contractor and loved hunting and guns, but most of all, his family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 66 years, Gracie Bonnette Jennings; children, Sharon Rhodes (Terry), Karen McAllister (Robert) and Brandon Lynn Jennings (Amy); 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Southern Funeral Home with Rev. Brian McAllister and Rev. Brendan Thomas officiating. Interment followed in Sanders Chapel Cemetery in Calvin.

Mr. Earl Glynn Smith, age 89 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2021.

Born Friday, December 18, 1931 in Winnfield, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his parents, Thelma Ionia Welch Smith and William Grady Smith; sisters, Dorasteen and Pauline Steel, and Lula Bell Barton; brother, Woody Smith; daughter, Glenda Diane Smith, and granddaughter, Caroline Rodgers.

Mr. Smith served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He drove a school bus for many years for the Winn Parish School Board and was a long-time custodian for First Baptist Church of Winnfield.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Earlene Smith; son, Kerry Wayne Smith; grandchildren, Howard Marshall Smith, Jodie Renee Hudgins, Cassie Jeanine Rodgers, Alesha Ann Smith, and Megan Smith; great grandchildren, Brielle Hudgins, Brentley Hudgins, Brayden Smith and Kaidence Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rev. Walton Deloy Shows, age 89 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021.

Born Friday, October 21, 1932 in Jonesboro, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his parents Cleo Barnes Shows and Walton A. Shows; wife, Jean Desadier Shows; brothers, Tommy and William Henry Shows; son-in-law, Sam McFarland; and great grandson, Eli Bryant Shows.

Rev. Shows served as pastor in various area Baptist Churches for over 50 years and was also retired from Williamette after 50 plus years of Service. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

Linda Kay Vines Harris

Linda Kay Vines Harris, 67, of League City, Texas passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 6, 2021 in Friendswood, Texas. She was born September 6, 1954 in Winnfield, Louisiana to Henry B. Vines, Sr. and Jewel “B” Franks Vines.

She was a graduate of Dodson High School and later Louisiana College where she received a BA degree in education to pursue her love for teaching. Linda spent nearly 40 years teaching and retired from Clear Creek ISD. Most of her teaching career was spent in Special Education where she truly loved each and every one of her students. If she wasn’t teaching, she was serving the Lord in her church whether it be singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school or most recently working in the church office part time.
