Winn Parish Fire District #3 held their first regular meeting of 2015 on Monday, Jan. 12, with a hefty agenda. The first item of new business included a packet that was received from the P.I.A.L. (Property Insurance Association of Louisiana), which specified items and criteria in which the fire district must meet.
The Winn Parish Police Jury held their first regular meeting of 2015 last Tuesday, Jan. 20, and the message that seemed to resonate the most was a theme that has carried over from 2014: rising costs and smaller funds.
The Winnfield City Council met for their monthly meeting on Jan. 13, and the agenda mostly consisted of questions asked by members of the council. District 2 Councilman Gerald Hamms, who inquired as to whom would appoint a new city marshal should the office become vacant, introduced the first non-action item of the night.
Dozens of Winn Parish citizens gathered at the Winnfield Kindergarten Annex to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King on Monday, Jan. 19. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Memorial Prayer Breakfast, sponsored by the Winn Parish Voters and Civic League, began with a call to order by Master of Services Louis Bell, Jr.
The first 2015 meeting of the Winn Parish School Board started with a swearing-in by Winn Clerk of Court Donald Kelley. Three new board members joined eight incumbents on Monday, and a light agenda made for a pleasant start for this new board.
The new parking lot across from the Winn Parish Courthouse had an official ribbon-cutting last week, where various representatives from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and local government were in attendance. The parking lot, which has been available for use since Sept., is the first of its kind in the state of Louisiana. Made of a special material called pervious concrete, its purpose is to eliminate storm water runoff and to provide storm water pollution prevention.
Jan. 1 began a new term for elected offices in Winn Parish and across the state, with several newly elected officials joining even more incumbents for this term. The highest-ranked of those elected are two new members of Congress, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy and U.S. Representative Dr. Ralph Abraham. They took their oaths of office on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the U.S. Senate.

Two longtime employees of the Winn Parish District Attorney’s Office retired in 2014. Martin Sanders, who served as Assistant D.A. for several years and Cas Moss, who has been working part time since 2000, also decided to end his tenure
