Winnfield named district’s cleanest city

The arrest of international Mother Jones reporter James West by the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office on Friday, March 13 blew the cover of an undercover reporter who was working inside the Winn Correctional Center.

The undercover reporter, now confirmed to be Shane Bauer, officially resigned his position at CCA on Tuesday, March 17. Bauer did not show up for work on Monday morning following the arrest, and Winn Parish Sheriff Cranford Jordan first discovered that this employee shared the same name as the famous journalist.

Mother Jones confirmed Bauer’s involvement at the facility by releasing the following statement on Wednesday, March 18:

Wildlife Heritage Banquet this weekend

The Winn Parish Longbeards National Wildlife Hunting Heritage Banquet will be held this Saturday, March 21 at the  Winnfield Civic Center. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m., with a meal served and an auction that will begin at 7:00 p.m.

20th Hog Dog Trials set for next Wednesday

Winn Parish’s biggest tourist attraction will serve the area next Wednesday, as the 20th Annual Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials brave the damp Winn Parish Fairgrounds. Winn received almost the average monthly rain in just a week, and more is coming, but sunshine is expected to meet travelers as they arrive on March 25. Over 10,000 spectators are estimated to be attending the big 2-0 celebration, and nearly 800 dogs. Of that number, nearly 90% are the official state dog, the Catahoula
Leopard (Cur).

Out of the Past: History of Montgomery, and the tale of Creola

Nothing is sacred to the dyed-in-the wool treasure hunter, not even a human grave. Indeed, with many of this fraternity the more hallowed the spot and greater the number of interments, the more anxious are they to dig and plunder about the place. Take the burial place of Thomas A. Woodard, founder of Montgomery as a case in point. This great pioneer who had been a general in the Sixth U.S. Cavalry was buried in a vault a mile or so east of the Mack Davison place in the pine woods.
