Young Adult Book Debut Held Last Week

The Winn Parish Library supplied “Debut” tickets for a Young Adult book reveal party to all of the Winn Parish schools that have any students in 6th-12th grade. The schools were asked to give these tickets to at least 15 of their students who would benefit the most. The students receiving the tickets were further encouraged to bring a friend to the after-hours reveal party in which the students would be the first to be able check out any of the over two hundred new books that were being added to the parishwide collection.

Mrs. Katherine Grantadams To Reign As Grand Marshal Of 2017 Christmas Parade

Article Image Alt Text

The Winnfield Kiwanis Christmas Parade will begin at 6:00 p.m. this Friday, December 1st. When the parade rolls, the Grand Marshal float will have a familiar, friendly face riding atop the float. In recognition of the 60 years that Grantadams Dairy Maid has been in business, Mrs. Katherine Grantadams will serve as the Grand Marshal. When I met with Mrs. Grantadams, in the back of the restaurant, she gave me an insight into the history of the popular drive-in.

Back in 1957, a young bread salesman with a young wife and two small daughters at home was looking for a change. Part of his regular bread delivery route brought him through Winnfield, where on occasion, he would stop at a drive-in and have a hamburger for lunch. The owners of that drive-in began talking to Mr. Russell Grantadams about opening a drive-in of his own, and his dream began developing.

Article Image Alt Text

At this time of year, as we gather with family and friends and reflect upon the many things we are thankful for, it’s important to remember that there are who will not be celebrating in a warm home, surrounded by family.

On October 17th, a group of volunteers came together at First Presbyterian Church and prepared hamburger lunches for those who were picking up boxes from the Winn Community Food Pantry. The group wasn’t only there to grill and distribute the bagged meals; they were also gathering information on the number of homeless individuals and families in Winnfield and Winn Parish. Yes. We have homeless people, right here in our community.

Early Release...Early Return

Article Image Alt Text

By Steve Colwell

A 34 year-old Atlanta man who gained early release on November 1 under the state’s controversial “Justice Reinvestment” program is back in jail. His freedom lasted just five days.

Winn Parish Sheriff Cranford Jordan said Rory LaCroix was out less than a week before he was arrested for the burglary of an Atlanta residence. The Sheriff said burglary was the same charge for which he had been incarcerated prior to his release.
