Winnfield Native Named New Director of Rapides Children’s Advocacy Center

Winnfield native Brandon Parker has been named the new director of the Rapides Children’s Advocacy Center; he started at his new position on Nov. 2. Parker has worked in law enforcement since 1997. While serving at the Pineville Police Department, he began to work with the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Winnfield Middle School, WSHS, Suddenlink, Bank of Central Louisiana Team Up for 9th Annual Food Drive

Winnfield Middle School and Winnfield Senior High School both teamed up with Suddenlink and the Winn Parish Food Bank of Central Louisiana to help with the 9th annual “Connecting to Those in Need” Food Drive. Winnfield Middle collected 860.7 pounds of non-perishable food items for those in need in the Winn community, totaling more than 700 items.

Winnfield City Council to hire three new employees as dispatchers, jailors

The Winnfield City Council met Tuesday, Dec. 8 for a regular meeting. The council adopted an ordinance to annex the Daniel Wyatt Trucking Property and an ordinance to an next the Martin Forrest Enterprises Inc. Property. Owners of both properties requested to be annexed into the city limits.

School Board recognizes, applauds exceptional Winn Parish students

The Winn Parish School Board met Dec. 7 and the meeting room was packed with parents, students and teachers. Order of business was subbed to allow ample time for the recognition of exceptional students from three area schools for their recent achievements.

Christmas Parade spreads Cheer throughout Winn

Although it didn’t achieve record numbers of attendance, Christmas spirit was not in short supply at Friday’s Christmas parade. The Kiwanis Club-sponsored parade rolled down Main Street on Dec. 4 under the reign of Grand Marshal Margie Price.

Plum Creek to merge with Weyerhaeuser, creating largest timber company in U.S.

Plum Creek, one of the largest land owners in the U.S., and Weyerhaeuser Company, one of the world’s largest private owners of timberlands, announced they have entered a definitive agreement, creating “the world’s premiere timber, land and forest products company,” according to Weyerhaeuser Company.

State ranks among highest in mental illness, lowest in access to care

Louisiana ranks among the states with the highest prevalence of mental illness and the lowest rates of access to care, according to The Mental Health Association’s 2015 report. Louisiana is ranked 47th of the 50 states and the District of Columbia on the report.

Thanksgiving Day shooting leaves Winn resident dead

A Winnfield resident was killed in a Thanksgiving Day shooting in Mesquite, Texas. The Mesquite Police Department responded to a shooting at 6:05 a.m. Thanksgiving Thursday at Hidden Springs Drive in Mesquite.
