Hunters Face Danger Using Tree Stands

Article Image Alt Text

Humans are designed and built with feet that are designed for standing and walking on the ground. The feet and claws of squirrels and raccoons serve multi-purposes. They can move around quite handily on the ground but when necessary, they can scoot up trees with ease.

A special time of year is right around the corner. Archery season for deer in much of the state kicks off October 1. This is when the majority of bow hunters will act like squirrels and raccoons; they’ll watch for deer from elevated positions with good reason. Deer watch for predators at eye level, not 20 feet above their line of sight.

Riders Support Shop With A Cop

Article Image Alt Text

Saturday morning brought out riders with a special mission - to support Christmas for local children. The non-profit Shop With A Cop organization held their annual fundraising ride and jambalaya lunch and drew a larger crowd than last year.

Riders assembled at the Winnfield City Police Department and prepared to enjoy the day’s seasonal weather. Sunshine made the ride pleasant for the motorcycle riders and those that escorted the group. Other community members met at the police department to eat lunch with the riders, and many lunches were purchased and delivered around town.

After the approximately two hour ride, participants returned to the police station and were greeted with a big jambalaya lunch and bread pudding for dessert. Winners of the silent auction went home with nice prizes, in addition to sun-kissed skin and a full stomach that everyone left with.

Tigers Coming Off Disappointing Losses, Looking For A Win Against J-Hodge Tigers

Article Image Alt Text

The Tigers of Winnfield Senior High School are recovering from two disappointing losses to teams who were described by Tiger Coach Bankston as being “established programs and playoff teams.” On the Friday leading into Labor Day Weekend the Giants from Jena came to Stokes-Walker Stadium and left with a 46 – 13 win. Then this past Friday night, the Tigers from St. Mary’s in Natchitoches left Winnfield with a 62 – 34 win.

Coach Bankston said that the Tigers may have two losses for the season, “but good teams have a way of rebounding. Everything being done is being done for a more positive outcome in the future.” He added that although the Tigers have some inexperienced players, “the positive side of this is that the more our inexperienced players get to play, the better they get.” Coach Bankston also stressed that every player played extremely hard, saying, “they may not have been in the right spot, but they gave 100%.”

Vehicle Burglaries Plague Winnfield

By Lt. Chuck Curry, Winnfield Police Dept., Public Information Officer

Since August 18, Winnfield residents have experiences a rash of vehicle break-ins, with over 20 reported in the last 2 weeks. Items taken usually involve money, purses, personal documents and guns left inside of vehicles at night by the owners.

Police are currently focusing their investigation on several groups of young, high school age males. Several suspects have been questioned or pending questioning as the investigation is continuing.

Several homeowners have video surveillance cameras that have provided officers with possible descriptions of the suspects. “Any person walking in neighborhoods between midnight and morning will be stopped and questioned,” warned Chief of Police Johnny Ray Carpenter. Carpenter, himself, has been working overnights in efforts to catch these thieves. “We have a curfew law in the city ordinance and it will be strictly enforced,” he stated.
