Stokes-Walker Stadium was packed for reunions and homecoming celebrations on Friday night, but fans left without the win they had been hoping for. The Bunkie Panthers were no match for the best efforts of the Tigers, and the final score of the game was 26-7.

Elections held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 were held quietly, with low voter turnout in Winn Parish, and around the state. The Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office anticipated a 15 percent voter turnout statewide based on historical data and early voting statistics. The fact that only 13.5 percent of voters did turn out in Louisiana “did not surprise us,” said Meg Casper, a spokeswoman for Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler’s office. Asked what contributed to the low voter turnout, Schedler said, “Overall, the treasurer’s race did not garner a lot of attention from voters, coupled with general frustration with government from the national level maybe seeping down to local elections.” Winn Parish voters turned out in even lower numbers with just over 10% of the registered voters showing up at the polls.

The Pumpkin Patch at Winn Parish Medical Center opened this week, much to the excitement of area residents who are ready to begin decorating for the fall season.

The Pumpkin Patch is open from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., through October 20th. From October 23rd – October 27th, the operating hours are 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. On October 30th and 31st, they will be open from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. On Saturdays, October 21st and 28th, the hours are 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

There are plenty of pumpkins, of all shapes and sizes to choose from, and prices range from 50 cents to $35. Pumpkin shoppers should bring cash, as it is the only form of payment accepted.

Winnfield Senior High School’s Homecoming Dance will be held this Saturday, October 14, from 9:00 p.m. until midnight. The dance will be held at the Central Louisiana Technical Community College Huey P. Long Campus, and dress clothes/shirt and tie are required.

The Winn Parish Health Unit, located at 301 West Main Street, will be giving drive-thru flu shots from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., on Wednesday October 18th. There will be a maximum fee of $10 and children 12 years old or younger will be seen inside the health unit. 

Those specially encouraged to participate include all high risk groups, such as children 6 months to 18 years, anyone 65 years or older, pregnant women or those planning on becoming pregnant, those with weakened immune system or chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes) the morbidly obese, and American Indians.

The Winn Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a parish-wide Scarecrow Building Contest, and all residents and businesses are invited to build a scarecrow on their own property. Participants are encouraged to be creative with their scarecrow displays and show off their design talents.

A press conference was held at the Winn Parish Courthouse on October 4, 2017, where representatives from the Louisiana State Police, Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest of 10 Winnfield residents, by Louisiana State Police, for distribution of narcotics in Winn Parish. 

After a two and a half year investigation into narcotics distribution in Winnfield, using information obtained from the intensive investigation, arrest warrants for multiple offenders were secured. In the early hours of Tuesday, October 3rd, those warrant swere executed.

Last Friday night the Stokes Walker Stadium was filled with fans from Winnfield and Caldwell Parish, where an emotional balloon release was held before the kickoff. Fans joined together to honor the memory of two Caldwell students who were tragically killed in an automobile accident on September 22. As a part of the balloon release planned for the annual Pink Out Game, balloons were also released in memory of Ava Grace Crockett and Tristen Danielle Robinson. Fans filled the stadium with pink shirts and pom-poms that were created and sold for the night, as a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Residents of Winn and surrounding parishes mourn the loss of longtime doctor and, Louisiana native, Dr. Leonard Raymon Collier. Dr. Collier graduated from Atlanta High School where he excelled on the basketball court, and the classroom. Upon graduation, he attended Northwestern State University, and then later moved to New Orleans to attend medical school. During those years, he received many accolades and academic recognitions. He received his degree of Medical Doctor from LSU School of Medicine in 1959 and completed his internship at the Confederate Memorial Medical Center in 1960. After completing his internship and completing four years of Residency Training in General Surgery, he returned to Winn Parish where he began a lifelong commitment to his patients.
