US Forest Service Ranger Brad Cooper at Kiwanis Club

US Forest Service Ranger Brad Cooiper (right) was the guest of Kiwanian Jesse Dyson agt last week’s Winnfield Kiwanis Club. Cooper, who came to the Winn Ranger District in March, said two new members will be added to the staff before the end of the year and a number of improvements are planned.

Kiwanian Jesse Dyson introduced guest speaker Brad Cooper who is the US Forest Service District Ranger for Winn. Cooper is a native of Pocatello, Idaho.

He spent four years on the USS Kitty Hawk working in the electrical field. After his naval service he got a degree in natural resources and forest management. He has worked in the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, Washington state and Arizona before coming to Winnfield in March of 2019.

Cooper said they love Louisiana especially the food. He plans to be a long-term ranger.

The Winn District is 160,000 acres. There are thinning and restoration projects in the works and ongoing. 42,000 acres are under treatment to improve the red-cockaded woodpecker habitat. They have installed 111 woodpecker inserts and transported young woodpeckers here.
