Nichols Speaks at Recent Rotary Meeting

Winnfield Rotarians heard a view on the history and role of law enforcement when Mike Nichols, a 33-year veteran of the Alexandria Police Department and now an investigator with the Winn District Attorney’s Office for the past 9 years was guest speaker Feb. 17.

2016 Annual Conservation Tree & Shrub Sale

The Dugdemona Soil and Water Conservation District will be having its Annual Tree and Shrub Sale at the Winn Farmers’ Market, located at the corners of Main and St. John Streets in Winnfield, Louisiana. The tree sale is our largest fund-raising event of the year. All proceeds of the sale directly benefit our community. Funds raised sponsor projects such as, Conservation Essay Contest, Conservation Poster Contest, Soil and Water Stewardship Week, conservation education, our Community Tree Planting project, Earth Day, Arbor Day, Project WET and restoration of wildlife habitat.

Kiwanis Division 11 Lt. Governor Donna Caffelatta Visits Kiwanis Club

Donna Caffelatta, Lt. Governor of Division 11 of the LaMissTenn district of Kiwanis International visited the Winnfield Kiwanis Club, Monday, Feb. 8, 2016. She first spoke to the club as a Board Member of the LaMissTenn District Foundation. The District Foundation is a charitable corporation and functions as the fund-raising arm of the district that provides financial assistance for Kiwanis projects and programs within our district.

Rotary Club

Rotarian Jay Hinckley (left) invited his good friend Terrel Deville to speak to the Rotary Club recently about his experiences over 40 years at the Methodist Children’s Home in Ruston, Louisiana. Mr. Deville began working at the home shortly after graduation from Louisiana Tech as the activities director and part-time social worker. He assumed the position as head of the home when he was 28 years old and held that position for 38 plus years.

Local Kiwanians Attend 201516 Mid-Year Conference for “The Red River Region”

Kiwanians Mickey Parker, Mike Nichols, Dr. Bill Gaddis and Margaret Coon attended the 2015-16 Mid- Year Conference for “The Red River Region” and the Official Visit of Governor Gary Graham. The host club for the meeting was the Alexandria Kiwanis club and it was held at the Kiwanis Camp in Tioga, Saturday, Jan. 30, 2015. The session was opened by Trustee Paul Funderburk from the Pineville Kiwanis club.

Cox Speaks at Recent Kiwanis Meeting

Mike Nichols introduced guest speaker Judge Jeff Cox, a sitting judge for Bossier/Webster parishes. Cox is running for the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. Sheriff Cranford Jordan read a little of Cox’s bio saying that he was raised in Minden and attended La. Tech, LSU and Southern Law School. Cox is a business and tax attorney and specialized in estate planning and elder care. He believes that a judge is a public servant. His father taught him the value of hard work and being dedicated to something. He is very involved in the community and considers it an honor to be able to serve. One of the programs he is involved with is helping to train police officers.

WPCB Whitetails Unlimited Set for Feb. 18

Winn Parish Chapter Banquet (Whitetails Unlimited) will be held Thursday, February 18 at the Winnfield Civic Center, 2000 South Jones Street in Winnfield. There will be games/raffles and social hour– 6:00 p.m. and a pork dinner served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 single, $20 spouse or child (age 15 and under). Individual general raffle packages will be sold at the door.

Beautiful Christmas Wedding Unites Couple

The splendor of Christmas at First Baptist Church Winnfield, Louisiana was reflected in the union in Holy Matrimony of Ashley Elizabeth Price, the adopted daughter of the late Larry L. Price and Mrs. Edith Price, to Shawn Michael Nacquin, the son of Ricky and Sandra Nacquin from Mamou, Louisiana. Dr. Jerold McBride officiated the marriage ceremony in the presence of numerous family and friends. The Christmas décor of First Baptist Church was the beautiful background setting of the marriage ceremony. It featured twinkling multi-colored lit Christmas Trees, multiple draping wreaths of red and green, candles surrounded by evergreen branches and a snow machine to complete the winter wonderland dream.

Rotary Club Hears from Kids Matter Too

Winnfield Rotarians heard at their Jan. 20 program about the Grant Parish-centered Kids Matter Too that helps young children Stand Up, Stand Strong and Stand Together. The program that can be viewed online at KidsMatter2.org has a mission to find solutions to problems facing young people. The goal is to help young people cope with and overcome the challenges of daily life by instilling hope and improving their well-being. “The whole idea is to save kids’ lives,” explained Lamar Briggs, a retire law enforcement officer.
