The Rotary Club of Winnfield

Article Image Alt Text

Desirae Bruce spoke to the Rotary Club of Winnfield on May 4, telling them about the court-appointed special advocate for children program. Winn is part of a growing 8- parish central Louisiana program with a new office here in Winnfield, located in the former Courthouse Pharmacy building. While she is the only staffer, Bruce coordinates work of trained volunteers who work one-on-one with children. Abuse/neglect is a problem as 39 children died last year in Louisiana due to that. Race and income are not contributing factors, Rotarians heard, and you may not even be able to tell the difference in affected children by their appearance in school. Volunteers are objective and have a heart for children. Most spend 5 to 10 hours a month with their clients. The next training sessions will be in September. “
