Special guests at the September 17 meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 9 of Winnfield were the 2016 Girls State representatives (left to right) Julie Bartley, Harli Austin, and Gabrielle Gresham. The young ladies spoke to the group about their recent experiences at La. Girls State, which is sponsored each year by the American Legion Auxiliary. At the close of the program, each girl was presented a certificate of excellence from the local chapter.

Winn Parish Clerk of Court Chesney Baxley speaks to Kiwanis Club

Newly elected Clerk of Court Chesney Baxley spoke to the Kiwanis club Monday, Sept. 19th. Some of the duties of the Clerk of Court are related to conveyances, mortgages, marriage licenses, recording of deeds and other things related to the court. The clerk’s office is responsible for civil and criminal minutes for the court. They also help with the elections and hold a school for commissioners.

Rotary Holds September 21 Meeting

“Healing Close to Home” is a theme of the Specialty Hospital of Winnfield as Rotarians heard at their September 21 meeting. Bryan Bogle, CEO of Winn Parish Medical Center, has previous told the members how the local hospital is working to provide as many quality medical services as possible to keep local residents from having to make long drives to receive medical care. He had the program Wednesday and invited administrator Chuck Jurek of the Specialty Hospital where the goal is similar.

Bryan Bogle, Winn Parish Medical Center CEO, speaks to Kiwanis Club

Winn Parish Medical Center CEO Bryan Bogle spoke to the Winnfield Kiwanis club, Monday, September 12. Bogle said he had returned to Winnfield in February and was very happy to be back and he planned to stay. He gave the club a history of the hospital beginning with Winnfield General Hospital begun in 1948 by local doctors. In 1970 the hospital was purchased by Humana, in 1994 it was purchased by HCA as part of the Rapides system, in 2009 Progressive Acute Care bought it and now in 2016 our current facility was purchased by Allegiance Health Management. The Winn Parish Medical Center has 86,000 square feet and is on 9 acres.

Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Canerday Celebrate 50 Years Jerry and Jessie Canerday will celebrate 50 years of marriage on October 1, 2016. The family would like to invite friends to a celebration of their 50 years together. The celebration will be at Calvin Baptist Church on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016 from 1-3 p.m. Jerry and Jessie have four children: Kim Canerday, Tammy Martin, Kathy Canerday and Tim Canerday. They have several grandchildren and one great grandson. Please come and celebrate.

Leaders Working to Rebuild a Thriving Community

A group of community leaders is working to rebuild a thriving community through the Winn Independent Revitalization Alliance, the Rotary Club of Winnfield learned at its Sept. 14 meeting. Larry Bates and Lionell Johnson, both businessmen who had moved off and established successful business careers before returning to their hometown of Winnfield, were the speakers. They were introduced by Rotarian Mayor Kiah Beville who acknowledged that efforts of the many leaders of this non-governmental alliance would not see results overnight. He is excited to see individuals who are willing to reinvest their energies in this community.

Cancer Screening Van To Make Stop In Winn Parish

The Cenla Medication Access Program’s cancer screening van will visit Winn Parish on September 26 and 27 to offer area residents breast, colorectal and cervical cancer screenings. The van will be located in the parking lot of the Winn Parish Medical Center at 301 W. Boundary Avenue, in Winnfield, from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Monday, September 26, and from 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27. Services include free clinical breast exams, mammograms, Pap smears, pelvic exams and take-home colorectal cancer kits. Appointments are required and the last day to schedule patient appointments is September 19.

Miss Winn Parish Fair Slated for September 24 at WKS

It’s time again to prepare for the Miss Winn Parish Pageant. The Pilot Club will be hosting the pageant on Saturday, September 24 at the Winnfield Kindergarten School on Maple Street.
