Article Image Alt Text

The summer meeting of WGHA was held on July 16, 2016. It was a very interesting meeting with special guests. Pictured are the WGHA Program Chairman Donald Boyette with Colonel(Ret USAF) Houston Polson. “Tinker” as he is known to his family and friends is the husband of our Editor Jeanie Polson. Although we appreciate all our members and guests coming from other parishes, cities, and states, Tinker came all the way from Saudi Arabia. He is on a diplomatic assignment for the U.S. Government and is at present the director of a project establishing a U.S. Army Command and General Staff College for the Saudi Arabian Ministry of National Guard in Rijadh, Saudi Arabia. He enjoyed the meeting and talked with Donald about the railroads and interest they presented to Winn Parish Past.

Remembering The Birth Of Lake Claiborne

Article Image Alt Text

There is a special segment Sunday nights on a Shreveport television station highlighting a hometown hero who served in the military. Most of those featured were from the Greatest Generation, having served in World War II. I was a bit taken aback last Sunday night when the hometown hero featured on the program was my long-time friend from Homer, Danny Roy Moore. He not only gained notoriety by his heroism during World War II, he is credited for something else. Years after returning from the war, Moore, a civil engineer, drew up plans for a lake in Claiborne Parish. Moore was eventually elected to the state Senate and working in consort with area state Representative.
