Once again we are preparing for the awesome opportunity to send gifts to needy children through Operation Christmas Child. We can attribute the success of this project to the support of local media and friends like you.
Winn Parish District Attorney Chris Nevils spoke to the Kiwanis club on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015. The good news is that nothing exciting is happening at the DA’s office. They are now settled in their new offices located in the former Winn Parish Library.
The annual Kiwanis Club Christmas Parade, always set for the Friday following the Thanksgiving holiday, will be Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. Entry forms can be found at either Sabine State Bank location as well as Dr. Gaddis’ dental office and the Winn Parish Clerk of Court office. Churches, businesses and schools are encouraged to enter.
Marvin Learohn Caldwell, a 1965 graduate of Winnfield High School, was recently inducted into the Northwestern State University 2015 Hall of Distinguished Educators. This prestigious award was established to recognize graduates of NSU who have made significant contributions in the field of education. Caldwell, and six other recipients were recognized in special events held during NSU’s Homecoming weekend of October 17, 2015. The names of the inductees were added to the Hall of Distinguished Educators permanent display in the Teacher Education Commons Area on the NSU campus.
Drive-thru flu shots will be offered at the Winn Parish Health Unit (Old Martin Hospital) located at 301 West Main Street. Please wear a short sleeve shirt and bring your valid photo ID, Medicaid and/or Medicare Card. There will be a maximum $10 fee. Children 12 or younger will be seen inside the health unit.
Kathy Turner, FINS (Families in Need of Services) officer, spoke to the Kiwanis club, Monday, October 26, 2015. This program has been available since 1994 and is under the jurisdiction of the Louisiana Supreme Court. The office is located in the Winn Parish District Attorney’s office but is not part of the DA’s services.
The Everett S. Fick American Legion Auxiliary District 8, Unit 9 held their October 2015 meeting at the Briarwood Caroline Dorman Nature Preserve in Saline, Louisiana. Briarwood is the birthplace and home of Caroline Dorman, a world renowned naturalist, author and artist. She was the first woman to be hired in the United States Forest Service.

Wade Bond with the Central Louisiana Children’s Advocacy Center spoke to the Winnfield Kiwanis club, Monday, October 19, 2015. Bond is also associated with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. The Children’s Advocacy program helps children who have been sexually abused. In the past, children had to tell their story numerous times to numerous people and it was very hard on them.
Can you capture the “Spirit of Winn Parish” in a photograph? The Winn Chamber of Commerce and the Pea Patch Gallery will host the “Spirit of Winn Parish” photography contest to see who can capture the “spirit” of the Winn area, town and people.
