The 13th annual Trista Tyler Scholarship Bass Tournament will be held Saturday, April 16 at Red River Midway Marina in St. Maurice, La. The cost per two-man team is $200, which includes $10 per boat big bass pot. The first place prize is $4,000 guaranteed. Pay back on entries is 60 percent – 100 percent pay back on big bass. The number of places paid will be based on the total number of entries. Boats will leave in the order which they are registered beginning at safe daylight.

The WSHS girls basketball team lost Friday’s playoff game against Donaldsonville 63-62. The narrow defeat brought the end of the team’s 16-game winning streak. “We played well and we played hard,” said head coach Kelli Edwards.

I think I first noticed it around my backyard bird feeder; I’m talking about the “pecking’ order. It’s that time of year again, Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball. Registration will continue through March 5. Ages are 3 and up, the cost is $55 for the first child and $45 for each additional child per family. You may pick up applications at the Grove Street Recreation Center.

First Annual Lady C. Gorham Team fishing tournament, to benefit the Gorham Family, will be held February 27, from at Caney Lake from 6:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., weigh in will be at Brown’s Landing. Cost per team is $100.

As I sit at my computer with fingers poised over the keyboard on Monday afternoon, I’m waiting anxiously for something to get done. The Iowa caucuses are tonight and I can’t wait for all that to be over and finished.  I’m so tired of hearing presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle lambast each other knowing full well that when one is eventually selected, the others will be singing the winner’s praises like he was a long lost brother.

Saturday January 23 brought news of a big blizzard hammering the northeast. Forecasts even called for a bit of snow, cold and windy conditions for north Louisiana meaning most rational thinking folks in our area were likely to put another log on the fire and hunker down under less hostile conditions. However, one Ruston duo, LA Tech students Gunner Durrett and his roommate Lane Cox decided to heck with a warm fire; they went fishing instead.

There is nothing sweeter than accomplishing something special or meeting a goal just before deadline. I had such an occasion once in Texas on a turkey hunt. The weather was awful, cold and rainy and the turkeys were tight-lipped.
