Durrett Lands Caney Lunker On Cold Windy Day

Article Image Alt Text

Saturday January 23 brought news of a big blizzard hammering the northeast. Forecasts even called for a bit of snow, cold and windy conditions for north Louisiana meaning most rational thinking folks in our area were likely to put another log on the fire and hunker down under less hostile conditions. However, one Ruston duo, LA Tech students Gunner Durrett and his roommate Lane Cox decided to heck with a warm fire; they went fishing instead.

With Glynn Harris

There is nothing sweeter than accomplishing something special or meeting a goal just before deadline. I had such an occasion once in Texas on a turkey hunt. The weather was awful, cold and rainy and the turkeys were tight-lipped.

Cook Offers Quail Hunts In Morehouse

Article Image Alt Text

by Glynn Harris

We know how it is, don’t we? January grinds to a chilly close, duck season, such as it was this year, comes to an end and we clean our shotguns, albeit reluctantly, because we didn’t get enough wing shooting to suit our tastes. Enter Rusty Cook to the rescue. Cook, who lives just outside Bastrop, lent an ear to a friend who had a successful pen raised quail operation going. He decided to take the plunge and is in his second season of offering quail hunts on his property in Morehouse Parish.

Looking Back On A Favorite Old Column

by Glynn Harris

While going through a box in the attic, I ran across some of my old columns I had written dating back to 1972 when I took my first halting steps as an outdoor writer with the Homer Guardian Journal. One in particular was written on January 4, the day I’m sitting at my computer for this week’s column. The difference is the column is dated January 4, 1973. If my ciphering is correct, that’s 43 years ago today.

LaPolitics.com

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department closed the public comment period last week on its proposed rule to begin selling advertisements to private companies. Last year the state Legislature approved legislation permitting the department to move forward with the process that could eventually lead to paid sponsorships. The legislation does not spell out exactly where the advertising can be placed, but it allows for signage to be put on the department’s property.

Lost A Brother, Gained Another During Past Year

Article Image Alt Text

The year 2015 was a year marked with high points and dark valleys. On April 30, my brother, Tom, two years younger than me, lost his battle with a debilitating illness. We buried Tom in DeRidder two days later. Tom and I grew up together with our boyhood years highlighted by time spent with our two first cousins, Doug and Sambo. We were the four boys of Harris Hill; Tom and me on one hill; Doug and Sambo within hollering distance on an adjoining hill.

Durrett Downs Two Trophies After Bully Buck Removed

Article Image Alt Text

We hear about school-yard bullies, unfortunately, too often. A dominating buffoon can create terror for some youngsters. The same thing can take place in the world of the whitetail deer, and Simsboro’s Dan Durrett saw it happen this past season. Once a “bully buck” was taken out of the herd, Durrett was able to down a ten point followed 10 days later by a big nine point with the combined measurements of the two trophies bumping almost 300 inches of bone. All three bucks were taken from the same stand.
