Crappie Masters Shine Spotlight on Lake D’arbonne

The Bass Masters tour has been on the map for years with professional anglers from across the country with names like Dance, Martin and Van Dam having their success on the tournament trail splashed across the pages of outdoor magazines year after year.

Thanks to Ray Scott who started the whole bass tournament business, the sport has made a handful of the better competitive anglers quite wealthy.

While bass fishermen have dominated the sport of competitive fishing since the get-go, there’s a new kid on the block that is growing by leaps and bounds around the country. Crappie fisherman now have a circuit all their own. Prize money has not yet reached the plateau enjoyed by professional bass anglers but perch jerking for cash continues to escalate. Crappie Masters is exploding in popularity around the country and when there is a qualifying tournament anywhere in the local area, the interest from fishermen and spectators reaches a fever-pitch level.

LaTerrion Green and other students gathered at Winnfield Senior High School as he penned his letter of intent with Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. Flanked by his family members and high school coaches, the soft-spoken, giant of a young man, proudly signed his letter of intent to continue his football career.

Hunting Shed Antlers A Sport All Its Own

Article Image Alt Text

There is a real good chance that when I hit the woods in a few weeks checking for turkey sign, I’ll find a bonus. Likely, I’ll find a shed buck antler or two. Seldom does a year go by that I don’t run across discarded headgear from a good buck or a dinky little spike or fork-horn. Now that deer season is over, bucks are starting to drop antlers and there are some people who have taken the sport of looking for shed antlers to a new level; some even belong to clubs whose members compete to see who can find the biggest and the most sheds during the off-season.

Keep on Keeping on Motto of Shelby

Whether in the major leagues or sandlot baseball, there is one admonition coaches insist players follow. When the hitter connects with the ball and an infielder scoops it up for what should be an easy out, the hitter could find himself riding the pine if he fails to do as he’s been taught. “Run it out”, is elementary instruction. Although highly unlikely, the throw to first base could be off the mark and the runner safe if he keeps running.

After hearing a report of a cougar image captured on a trail camera in north Louisiana recently, I asked my Face Book friends to report any cougar sightings they may have had. After hearing from several, I wrote a column earlier this month.

Former Players Help Coach Find Big Buck

Article Image Alt Text

Joey Pender coached high school football for 33 years, retiring from West Ouachita high school after the season just ending. He has coached teams to a plethora of wins with the possibility that somewhere along the way, he was unceremoniously doused with Gator Aide. Pender would have had no complaints had former player, Rusty Autry, poured a bucket of the drink on his head the morning of January 4. Autry came with a blood trailing dog that ended Pender’s frustration at not being able to find the big 10 point buck he shot.

“I have been after this particular buck for the past two seasons,” said Pender. “I would see him occasionally on my trail camera but all the images were taken at night.”
