WSHS Baseball Team Ends Season

Article Image Alt Text

The Winnfield Senior High School 2016 – 2017 baseball team finished their season with an overall record of 14 – 19 and 5–5 in district play. Although most would look at this record and say it’s not a winning season, others look beyond the numbers and know the boys have a lot to be proud of. The season was filled with joys, sorrows, errors, rough games, close losses, bad calls, double plays, shut outs, home-runs, a grand slam, amazing catches, defensive plays, close games, and great pitching! For these boys, baseball is not just a game – it is a way of life. Sometimes it is more than numbers or stats on a piece of paper. It is more than winning games. Baseball is about building character, working as a team, learning the importance of sportsmanship, and being there for your team-mates. Baseball is about playing a game you love with heart and integrity.

Thinking About Summertime

Article Image Alt Text

Summertime. What special meaning does it have for you? What thoughts and memories are triggered when you think about that three month span of time when the “living is easy and the cotton is high”?

To most of us, it’s trying to find a place to keep cool, getting outside work done early so as to avoid the penetrating heat of the summer sun. In my childhood days, though, it was a different story.

Summertime meant a three-month reprieve from sitting in a classroom and having to do homework. I’d count the days off during May, days that passed at the same snail’s pace as those last days before Christmas. When the school bell rang for the last time that school year, what an exciting time that was.

Under Utilized Gems in Lincoln Parish

Article Image Alt Text

It sometimes amazes me how some things are taken for granted. You know they’re there; you drive by them everyday but you’re headed some-where else and it never crosses your mind to stop by.

Lincoln Parish is home to atleast two of those entities that we know are there but most of us fail to visit. Lincoln Parish Park is located in the beautiful tree-studded hills just north of Ruston. Granted, the local community is generally supporting this mecca in the pines but if you check license plates of visitors to the park, most are from other states. Bike trails, hiking trails, a beautiful lake for fishing and swimming, picnic areas and overnight camp sites are there for a modest fee for families to enjoy

New Weapon Against Feral Pigs

Article Image Alt Text

Ron and Tes Jolly operate a farm in east-central Alabama. Tes is a nationally-known wildlife photographer while Ron works for the state of Alabama and is an award winning outdoors writer.

I read an article by Ron in the July-August issue of Turkey Country magazine, published by the National Wild Turkey Federation. This article hit home because the problems the Jolly’s are having on their Alabama farm mimics the problems land owners, hunting lease members and the general public are also having here in Louisiana.

“Ten years ago,” Jolly writes, “feral hog sightings were a novelty on our east-central Alabama farm. A decade later, he points out, he would be in an all-out war to preserve his farm’s water resources, habitat and food plots he had worked so hard to manage and establish, habitat and resources the hogs were destroying.

Don’t Disturb Deer Fawn

Though they may appear to be vulnerable and in need of assistance, unattended white-tailed deer fawns encountered in the wild should not be disturbed, according to Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ (LDWF) biologists. LDWF is reminding the public the best practice is to leave them alone and to remember it is against the law to capture young deer or any other wild animal.

Newborn fawns rely on their spotted coats and concealment during the first few weeks of life. Does will forage nearby and return periodically to nurse the young fawn. The lack of flight and hiding strategy phase of a newborn fawn often creates the illusion of abandonment. However, as fawns grow and develop, they will begin to forage for food alongside the mother.

Brady Johnson and Daniel Martin

Article Image Alt Text

Brady Johnson, age 11, and Daniel Martin, age 10, got the surprise of their young lives two weeks ago. Their Poppy and Gran, Wayne and Judy Harlan, surprised them with tickets to Omaha, Nebraska for Game 2 of the Men’s College World Series, LSU vs. Florida State. Brady and Daniel were the first fans to form a line to welcome the LSU Tigers to the TD Ameritrade Park. They held their signs and got high fives from all of the players and coaching staff. They were amazed at the size of the ballpark and how many LSU fans traveled to Omaha. Sporting their brand new souvenir ballcaps, bought earlier in the day, they watched the game intently and enjoyed some ballpark food favorites. A foul ball landed two rows in front of them and they both had their arms stretched as far as possible trying to catch it. After the WIN they joined other LSU fans to send the Tigers off to rest up for the next game.
