MONROE – Two Northwestern State intramural teams won Louisiana Collegiate Intramural-Recreation Sports Association championships this weekend at bi-annual LCIRSA state tournament in Monroe.

Northwestern State won first place in women’s basketball and co-rec softball. More than 600 students from 14 state public and private colleges and universities competed.

“Our students did an outstanding job of representing the university at the tournament,” said Jason Stelly, assistant director of intramurals. “Winning two state championships shows the hard work both teams did and the overall quality of Northwestern State’s intramural programs.”

Texas Provides Excitement Galore

Article Image Alt Text

April means different things to different people. For some, it’s time to get gardens planted. This is the time of year when eggs are dyed and Easter finery is selected. For me, April means I get my work done ahead of time and I start getting ready for my annual trek to the Lone Star state to chase wild turkeys.

This year, I joined four hunting partners leaving home for the 10 hour drive to fantastic Russell Ranch near Menard, Texas, a region that looks as different as daylight and dark from north Louisiana. Where we have pines, out there is mesquite and cactus and rocks, lots of rocks.

While my primary goal in making the trip each spring is to hunt turkeys, I never spend a few days there without seeing things that are just flat-out fascinating.

Meet It is rare when a high school athlete is able to continue their sports careers after graduation, but one Winnfield Senior High School student will be able to enjoy competition long after her May 2017 graduation. Kaylie Lasyone, daughter of Rex and Ashley Lasyone, has recently been recognized for her years of hard work in the rodeo arena with a scholarship from Louisiana State University in Eunice. Kaylie’s primary competitive event will be barrel racing and she will also compete in team roping. She plans to major in Biology and possibly pursue a degree in Veterinary Medicine.

“Forty by Eighty” in the Books

Article Image Alt Text

Do you have a “bucket list”, stuff you’d like to accomplish before you “kick the bucket”?

My list is rather short. The first one I recall is that I wanted to one day go to the north country in winter and ice fish. I got to pull that off five years or so ago when I was invited on a trip for writers to Wisconsin to experience several things, including ice fishing. Scratch that off the list.

My latest “bucket” item has to do with something I wanted to accomplish by the time I reached a certain age. I had a birthday last week. I was born on March 29, 1937. Do the math; I turned 80 last Wednesday.

Lawyer Turned Chef Making Waves With New Cookbook

As an outdoor writer/broad-caster, I get to visit with a variety of interesting people from hunters and fishermen to biologists and experts in out-doors topics. Most interviews provide good information for my readers/listeners.

Occasionally, I get to interview someone who really stands out and I can’t help but get a bit excited about the quality of information I’ll get to share with my audience.

Such was the case last week when talking with Stacy Lyn Harris, a lady who fits the definition of “dynamic” which Webster defines as energetic and vigorous.

Treasures Found When Turkey Hunting

Article Image Alt Text

We’re sitting here on the cusp of one of my favorite times of year. Its spring; dogwoods and azaleas are blooming, everything is turning green, except for the yellow dust that falls like a heavy mist from my pine trees. I’ve already had to break out the lawn mower so, yes, it is spring.

As much as I enjoy watching the metamorphosis of the drab shades of winter evolve into a kaleidoscope of color, there is another experience that supersedes being there for the birth of yet another spring. Wild turkey season opens in Louisiana and the prospect of hearing a longbeard gobbler sound off from the roost and watching him in full strut, slowly shuffle his way to my gun makes other springtime happenings pale in comparison.
