North Louisiana Isshinryu Karate Announces Rank Promotions and Award Ceremony

Students at North Louisiana Isshinryu were given an opportunity to advance to their next level martial arts training at the close of the year. The karate students were tested on their knowledge and  technique for their requiredlevel of training. As always, effort, attitude and respect are a big part of each rank test. On Dec. 22, North Louisiana Isshinryu Karate  held its annual end of yearawards ceremony. While every student in karate who learns and moves forward is a winner and achiever, a handful were recognized for their outstanding achievement in 2014. North Louisiana Isshinryu Karate is located in Winnfield and is looking forward to another great year in Martial  Arts Training

Out of the Past: Early Winn Parish Sports

The accompanying group picture recorded the interest in the 1930s in baseball. Harvey O. Myrick is shown third from left (standing) in the back row. The other identifications also bring back warm memories of this active group of sportsmen. The late Arnet Garris is first remembered as the genial clerk at H.A. (Dick) Porter’s Dixie Drug Store before completing  his working career atthe Winnfield U.S. Post Office. The late Hervert (Fat)  Bass was a former city marshal. It is now hard to recall that the young W. Warren Allen (Sr.) shown herewith as mascot grew up to become a successful business man and a high ranking officer of the prestigious Masonic Lodge piror to his untimely demise. H.F. (Bill) Holstead, the genial manager of this team, now lives on Little River with his second wife, the former and personable Ina Fulton. Volmer (Shorty) Bowen was always clowning but very intent when it came to his game of baseball.
