Late Season Adjustments Needed for Post Rut Bucks

My favorite college football team, the LSU Tigers, have had a tendency this season to play tentatively and sometimes sloppily during the first half of a game. I get aggravated and am sometimes tempted to flip to the Outdoor Channel where hunters almost always get their game.

As the second half kicks off, the Tigers usually come out fired up and do a much better job in the second half. Why? The coaches changed the game plan to fit the situation.

The Birds of Winter Are Back

Article Image Alt Text

Seasons change and as they do, transitions identified with each season slowly begin taking place. As winter begins losing grip on our world, bits of pale green slowly emerge from tips of branches and tender shoots make their way through dead drab gray of grass on the lawn. The morning chill is replaced by subtle warmth.

The increasing temperatures and full-blown greenery of spring give way to summer with its shimmering heat making waves across the pasture. Air conditioners run full tilt making living conditions bearable.

Autumn follows as leaves on oaks and hickories begin taking on a tired, tinny look as they flutter to the ground. Mornings again take on a more comfortable feel; a light jacket feels right.

Let ‘Em Go So They Can Grow Works for Brad Martin

Stuff is really starting to happen in the deer woods around our area. Freezers have been cleaned out making room for the fresh tasty venison that will be added. Occasionally, a hunter gets lucky and downs a buck worthy of wall space in the den.

Williams Boys Have Special Weekend at Deer Camp

Article Image Alt Text

The first thing that popped into my mind after spending time at the camp this weekend with three special fellows was a song by the late Don Williams. Entitled “Good Old Boys Like Me”, the song has a line that triggered my creative juices into action.

From his velvety mellow throat came the words….”And those Williams boys they still mean a lot to me….Hank and Tennessee.”

After what happened down at Two Creeks hunting club this weekend, I’m paraphrasing Don Williams words. Instead of Hank Williams and Tennessee Williams my focus is on three other Williams boys, Chester, Byron and Brandon.”

Chester is the patriarch of the group. Byron is his son and Brandon his grandson. All three downed impressive bucks this weekend on Two Creeks hunting club in Jackson Parish. Byron was the first when he downed a big 8 point weighing 200-plus pounds Thursday with his 45-70 primitive firearm.

Persistence and Determination By The Tigers Shows On The Scoreboard

Article Image Alt Text

The persistence of the young Winnfield Senior High School Tiger football team, and their efforts to refine their skills and eliminate errors, paid off last Thursday. The game against the Lakeview High School Gators from Campti, was originally scheduled for Friday, but was played early, in anticipation of severe thunderstorms.

Even with the one-game suspension of five of the Tiger players, as a result of an on-field altercation at Holy Savior Menard the prior week, the Tigers showed up and showed out. Some of the younger players stepped up and openings on the field were filled, and the performance was one that won’t soon be forgotten.

Supersititions Spice Up Hunting

Do you want to get skunked on your next fishing trip? Don’t you dare catch a fish on your first cast. If you do, you’ll have lousy success the rest of the day. It’s best to make your first cast out near the boat where no bass could possibly be lurking and reel it quickly before a fish sees it.

With deer seasons open, you’ll probably be exposed to traditions with which most of us are familiar. You probably remember your first deer and what happened soon after your deer was retrieved. You got blood from your deer smeared on your face because that’s what we do when someone, especially a youngster, bags his first deer.

Have you ever missed a deer and your hunting companions know you missed? You were relieved of the tail of your shirt; it’s probably still hanging on the wall at the camp along with those shirttails of others who missed deer.

Youngsters Successful on Youth Deer Hunts

Article Image Alt Text

For decades, wildlife agencies around the country are giving youngsters an edge in getting them interested in deer hunting. In Louisiana, a youth hunt is scheduled one week prior to opening day for the remainder of hunters.

For this special hunt, it’s the adults who tag along as they accompany, coach and assist youngsters who are the only ones allowed to pack a firearm. Sometimes the little guys just get to enjoy being out in the deer stand with dad or granddad watching nature do what nature does. Other times, opportunities are presented where the teaching and instructions of the adults get real. That’s when a deer steps out and it’s game-on.

Youth season took place last Saturday and two successful hunts have come to my attention. Breyden Freeman and Wyatt Chandler are a couple of youngsters who had the opportunity to stand over their trophies after following instructions their grown-up coaches told them to do.
