Winnfield Tigers Fall in Quarterfinals

Article Image Alt Text

The #6 seeded Winnfield Tiger Baseball team were defeated by the #3 Welsh Greyhounds in the Quarterfinals of the State Baseball Tournament this past Thursday and Saturday. It is not the Cinderella ending the boys were hoping for, but everything that could go wrong for the Tigers did. Unfortunately that is the game of baseball, and it just wasn’t their weekend. The Winnfield Baseball team had a great season despite their elimination in the third round. Capturing the 2-3A District Championship, 8-1 record districts and finishing with an overall record of 22-13. All good things come to an end, but it is just the beginning for all these boys. The Drought is Over: WSHS Baseball Team Third Round Bound-Quarterfinals

Article Image Alt Text

The Winnfield Tigers welcomed the #11 seeded Springfield team last Friday to start the 2nd round of the baseball playoffs. It would be the best of 3 with the winner of the series moving on to the quarterfinals. The boys started off hot drilling the ball going up 4-1 early in the game, however this lead quickly evaporated with the tigers being spelled by countless errors that saw their lead disappear and they dropped the first game, 6-9. It was disappointing for the boys as they watched Springfield team and fans celebrate their win with a upset of the #6 ranked Tigers on their turf. The Tigers would be looking for revenge on Saturday knowing they had just beaten themselves.

WSHS Baseball Team 32a District Champions 2018

Article Image Alt Text

The WSHS boy’s baseball team brought home the district championship this past week, taking 2 out of 3 wins against their rival, many tigers who were sitting in the #3 spot in the state rankings. In the first matchup this past Tuesday playing at home, Winnfield, ranked #7 in the state, defeated many in a thrilling victory 2-0. It was a great pitching duel with both pitchers from Winnfield and many only allowing 3 hits a piece, but Winnfield made their hits count getting the base runners across home plate lifting the Winnfield tigers for that first needed victory in the 3 game series and upsetting many. The boys then traveled to many on Thursday to finish the series and play a double header. The stands were filled with tiger fans from many and Winnfield knowing one of the tiger teams was going to walk away with the championship. It was a beautiful day for baseball with sunny skies and a little crisp feeling in the air.
