WSHS Baseball Team 32a District Champions 2018

Article Image Alt Text

The WSHS boy’s baseball team brought home the district championship this past week, taking 2 out of 3 wins against their rival, many tigers who were sitting in the #3 spot in the state rankings. In the first matchup this past Tuesday playing at home, Winnfield, ranked #7 in the state, defeated many in a thrilling victory 2-0. It was a great pitching duel with both pitchers from Winnfield and many only allowing 3 hits a piece, but Winnfield made their hits count getting the base runners across home plate lifting the Winnfield tigers for that first needed victory in the 3 game series and upsetting many. The boys then traveled to many on Thursday to finish the series and play a double header. The stands were filled with tiger fans from many and Winnfield knowing one of the tiger teams was going to walk away with the championship. It was a beautiful day for baseball with sunny skies and a little crisp feeling in the air.

Lady Cougars Rebound

Article Image Alt Text

Kasey Bevill

After losing several key players and their head coach off last year’s state qualifying softball team, most people considered this a rebuilding year for the Lady Cougars. The list of doubters did not include the team. With no player beyond the 10th grade, the girl’s young softball team is currently ranked #1 in the state Class C division with a 13–3 record.

Last week’s brutal schedule is an illustration of the team courage and work ethic coaches day delineates this squad. Six games in five days against highly ranked teams from various classifications (every opponent in the top ten of their division) proved the caliber of this squad and moved them up in the rankings.

Tigers Get Sweet Revenge During 7 Game Winning Streak

Article Image Alt Text

The WSHS Tiger baseball team is playing some great baseball, sporting a seven game winning streak, with the momentum growing stronger, with each game.

After going 1 – 2 overall in the UC Tournament down south, the boys have rallied by going 8 – 1 in their last three tournaments. The Tigers have put on a fabulous showing behind fantastic pitching, great defense and hot bats to go 2 -1 overall at the Grant Tournament, 3 – 0 in the WSHS Tournament, and 3 - 0 in the Jena/Caldwell Tournament.

The Tigers are competing against some solid teams, helping them become more confident and tougher with each game. They played with excitement and did not easily back down. They came back with several victories in the 7th inning. Never count them out; they are hungry and having fun as a team.

At the time of this writing, the WSHS baseball team is 10 – 6 overall and ranked 7th in the state.
