Trista Tyler Memorial Awards $8,000.00 In Scholarships

The Trista Tyler Memorial Scholarship Committee awarded $8,000.00 to Winn Parish Seniors that met the criteria for 2015. General requirements for this $500.00 scholarship are an overallgrade point average of 3.2 or better, ACT score of 18 or above, be a member of the school’s athletic team for at least 2 years including Senior year, be active in at least 2 clubs or school organi-zations, have a good attendance record and have no major disciplinary action, good character, pleasant personality and exhibit dedication.

Several ordinances introduced and adopted by Council

The Winnfield City Counciladopted and introduced sever-al ordinances at their May 12meeting, including a much-lauded “obscenity ordinance”in the wake of a recent inci-dent that occurred at theWinnfield City Hall.The meeting began with anupdate on the condemnationof a piece of property in thecity, cited as the “OdamsEstate.” No action was takenon the condemnation process.

The Winn Parish SchoolSystem honored 37 studentswith a Senior ScholarsBanquet on Monday, May 11.Graduating seniors fromAtlanta High School, CalvinHigh School, Dodson HighSchool and Winnfield SeniorHigh School who have earneda 3.5 GPA for their entire highschool career were recognizedfor this achievement beforegraduating later in the week.

Jury to pursue capital improvement plan

The Winn Parish Police Jurors were in good spirits at a special called meeting on Tuesday, May 5, following a 67% victory for the road tax proposition that had passed the weekend prior. Jurors expressed their gratitude to the people of the parish for approving the tax, and immediately began discussions on how to move forward.

Employees were honored

Eleven Winn Parish School Board employees were honored with a reception on May 4 on the occasion of their impending retirement. Each retiree was presented with a plaque and a bell, as well as a touching written account of their school careers by principals and adminstrators. The presentation was followed by punch and hordourves provided by the Winn Parish School Board.

Road Tax Proposition passeswith overwhelming support

The Winn Parish Sales TaxProposition introduced by theWinn Parish Police Jury sawan overwhelming majority atthe polls on Saturday.68% of total votersapproved of the measure, anumber totaling 824. The naysnumbered 391, or just 32%.
