And the Clerk Walks Away

Donald Kelley departs from his office at the Winn Parish Courthouse for the last time as Winn Parish Clerk of Court on Friday, July 31. He has traveled this path for the last 33 years and, with family and friends in tow, has set his sights on retirement. Various employees of other Courthouse departments met him in the hallway to wish him good luck, a kind gesture for Winn Parish’s longest-serving clerk. Kelley was present for the swearing-in of interim clerk Kim Gilliam, who will serve in his stead until the next clerk takes office on July 1, 2016. Police warn of new scams

Winnfield City Police Chief Johnny Ray Carpenter and Sergeant Allen Marsden wish to inform the public of two new phone scams that are currently making their way around the parish. The first scam is a call tha ttells you that you have been approved for a bank loan and all that you need to do is finish the application to receive a loan in the amount of $5,000. The object here is to obtain your bank account and routing number.

Montgomery Councilman arrested in Winnfield

A member of the Montgomery, LA Tow Council was arrested in Winnfield over the weekend while traveling with a female companion. Winnfield City Police Officers pulled over 49-year old Jack B. Rushing of Montgomery late Saturday night and charged him with possession of a Schedule IV narcotic and failing to use a turn signal.

Jury adopts 2015 tax millage rates

The Winn Parish Police Jury met for two public meetings on Monday, July 20. The agenda set forth contained several items that were o fvarying degrees of importance.Police Jury Vice-President Doris Leeper, who filled in foran absent President Jack McFarland, conducted the first meeting of the night. This was to adopt the 2015 ad valorem tax millage rates within the parish, and all of thos stayed the same as in previous years.

Parish English/Language Arts

Eleven Winn Parish English/Language Arts teachers were present at the Winn Parish Library for a “Write Like This” event presented by the North western State UniversityNational Writing Project on July . ELA teachers from the seventh through tenth grades learned new writing techniques to implement in their classrooms in the coming year. The class was presented by Winn Parish native Leeanne Bamburg Bordelon.

Fun in the Sun

It wasn’t hard to find a way for the little ones at First Baptist Church Pre-School to beatthe heat this summer. Their parents packed their swimsuits and sandles for a fun afternoonin the water on the east side of the church. They delighted in moving from one water activity to the next, gleefully enjoying a break from their usual schedules.

High grade marijuana seized on way to Winn Parish

Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies intercepteda Winn Parish man transporting approximately 1.1 poundsof suspected high grade marijuana traveling from Houstonto Winnfield during a trafficstop on La. Hwy 6 West onSunday evening according to Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Victor Jones Jr.

Council discusses possible Recreation Tax

The July 14 meeting of the Winnfield City Council saw various topics of discussion about the city workings, butthe most interesting of which came in the form of a non-action item up for discussion,listed on the city agenda as“City Services.”District 2 Councilman Gerald Hamms discussed the possibility of introducing a“Recreation Tax” that would be used to fund services forthe Winnfield Recreation Department.
