Winn Parish experienced its first full-fledged snow day since 2010 when three inches accumulated over the evening and night on Thursday, Jan. 23. Schools were cancelled, bridges were closed and huge road closures resulted in traffic jams all over south Louisiana.

Sale of ecigarettes to minors could become illegal

Changes to a law regarding minors and tobacco could be on the horizon this year. Winn Parish District Attorney Chris Nevils looks to prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors. “It’s probably one of the most addictive substances on the planet,” said Nevils. “And anything that I can do, anything that our legislation can do to make it somewhat more difficult for children to get that habit going…I think we would all be in favor of.”

Dozens of Winn Parish citizens gathered at the Winnfield Kindergarten Annex Cafeteria on Monday, Jan. 20, for the annual prayer breakfast in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Elected officials held court with members of the community, and speakers included Rev. Joel Hines of The Family Church and Rev. Gavin Hamms of The New Zion Baptist Church. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast is sponsored by the Winn Parish Voters’ and Civic League.

La. Hall of Fame announces 2014 inductees

The Louisiana Political Museum announced the 2014 Louisiana Political Hall of Fame Inductees on Friday, Jan. 17. Induction activities begin in Winnfield, Louisiana on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 with a reception from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at the Louisiana Political Museum, located at 499 East Main Street. At 6:00 p.m. the induction banquet will be held at the Winnfield Civic Center, located at 2000 South Jones Street. Tickets for the induction banquet can be purchased from the museum for $50.00 each by calling (318) 628-5928 prior to Jan. 24, 2014. All tickets must be reserved and paid in advance.

Winn Parish School Board elects new president

The Winn Parish School Board began their first meeting of 2014 with the election of a new board president. Exiting-president Matt Walton handed the seat at the end of the table over to the newly elected Durane Johnson. Johnson then announced the nomination of Christy Harrell for the position of Vice-President.

Missing Person Found

Monroe Police are currently investigating a found body in the 2700 Block of Desiard St. at approximately 1:00 PM Monday. The body of a white male subject was found behind a business located at the above location. A neighbor was walking in the area when his dog found the body. The body appeared to have been at the location for several weeks and was in a somewhat decomposed state.
