The Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Winn Parish Police Jury, began a parish-wide clean up effort on Monday, July 20. Litter Patrol will work three days a week to clean up roads throughout the parish. Inmates will be used for labor, and a sheriff’s deputy will accompany them to help those roads in the parish that do not see a lot of cleanup effort

Law enforcement personnel responded to a call at 9:09 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, concerning an overturned 18-wheeler at the intersection of Highway 84 and 167 in front of P.K. Smith Motors. The log truck was taking the turn onto 167 when it toppled over onto a vacant lot across from P.K.’s. A driver and a passenger were in the vehicle, but both refused medical attention

Plum Creek Timber in Joyce donated a $6,000 check to the Winnfield Senior High School Tiger Football Team on Friday, July 11. The money will go toward the purchase of a utility vehicle to be used by the football program. A bright, warm summer morning greeted several Winnfield citizens as they gathered in the Winnfield Civic Center to take the oath of office and assume their new elected positions on July 1. Mayor Kiah Beville, Police Chief Johnny Ray Carpenter

and Winnfield City Council members Jesse Edwards, Gerald Hamms, Sarah Junkin and Matt Miller were officially sworn into office during a ceremonious event notable for the air of “hope” surrounding the Winnfield Civic Center

The National Rifle Association Foundation wrote out a check to the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office totaling $20,000. The money was the cut of what was raised from the 2013 NRA Banquet that was held in Winn last August. Upkeep of the Sheriff’s Office Shooting Range is the primary use of the money.

For the fourteenth consistent year, Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (Central LA AHEC) collaborated

with Winn Parish Medical Center and Winn Parish School Board to bring the “A-HEC of a Summer” program to students in the area. Selected high school students volunteer at Winn Parish Medical Center for 15 days during the summer.

The Winnfield High School class of 1964 hosted the 50 anniversary of their graduation during the weekend of June 27 and 28 at the Winn Civic Center. The class of ’64 was the last to graduate from the old high school, located across from the Winnfield Primary School, before the opening of the current Winnfield Senior High School.

The Winn All-Stars Dixie Darlings, ages 7-8, earned second place in the Dixie State Tournament in Alexandria. The

Darlings lost 7-0 to Sabine Parish, a team that made it all the way to the Dixie World Series last year and placed second in the nation
