All children and their parents are invited to come and enjoy Robert Neyland’s performance at “Cowboy Bob” that is dynamic, energetic and entertaining at Winn Parish Library Wednesday, June 1 10 a.m. and again at the Sikes Brank at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 2 he will be at the Atlanta Branch at 10 a.m. and the Dodson Branch at 2 p.m. “Cowboy Bob” is bringing his Wild West Round Up to the Winn Parish Summer Reading Program! There will be Cowboy songs, a magic show, a mini Rodeo and balloon animals. A Hooting Hollering good time is guaranteed for all!

Nineteen-year-old Jasmine King, a senior at Winnfield Senior High School, was selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship through the 2016 LHSAA Scholarship Program. King, who plays basketball and runs track, applied for the scholarship through LHSAA in the fall of 2015.

The Winn Parish Police Jury met Monday, May 16 in the Winn Parish Courthouse. Road Superintendent Perry Holmes updated the Jury on the continuing street repairs across the Parish after the March flood. The Jury voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to assist the Village of Calvin by cleaning and digging out ditches to open up culverts on North 5th, North 4th and South 3rd Streets, as well as to repair a hole in the middle of North 3rd Street. The Jury also voted to assist the Village of Atlanta by grading the following streets: Pennywell, Collier, Carter Lane, School, part of Jessie Hanson, Graff, Bell Loop, Finklea and Longino.

During the Memorial Day holiday, the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Winnfield Police Department, will be teaming up with the Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission and other agencies across the state to participate in the “Click It or Ticket” program. The goal is simple – get everyone in the car to buckle up. This is a statewide effort to reduce the total number of traffic fatalities on our roads and highways.

The Winnfield City Council met Tuesday, May 10 for a regular meeting. City Engineer Henry Shuler led the meeting with good news. The City has been approved for funds toward a massive street repair project. He presented the Council with a packet outlining each street proposed for improvements.

After firefighters were dispatched to a false alarm on May 10, the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested Tiffany Malone, 27, of Winnfield and charged her with Improper Supervision of a Minor by a Parent (Criminal Mischief). On May 10, 911 operators received several calls of a fire at the Big Creek Baptist Church in Jordan Hill. Winn Parish Fire District #3 dispatched to the call that turned out to be false. Apparently, a juvenile was making the reports on a pre-paid cell phone that was turned off. The WPSO reminds parents to not let their children play with cell phones that have been turned off, as the phone will still contact 911.

The Winn Parish School Board honored 14 retirees at the 2016 Retirement Tea on Monday, May 2. The retirees are as follows: Lisa Roberts, Atlanta High School; Katrecia McDow, Calvin High School; Marla Hemperley, Dodson High School; Donna Grider.

The Winn Parish School Board met Monday May 2 in the Winnfield Middle School Library following the Winn Parish School Board Retirement Banquet. The Board accepted a Finance and Budget Committee Report that recommended the approval of a request by Mr. Etoy Ashley seeking permission to use the Winnfield Primary School cafeteria for the Summer Feeding Program.
