Mrs. Marjorie Price, on behalf of the Price Family, is shown presenting a check for $5,000 to Sheriff Cranford Jordan to go toward the purchase of a rescue boat for the Winn Parish Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Jordan noted that Mrs. Price and her family have always been ready to help the community during disasters and are an asset to the community. “This is a welcome addition to our rescue equipment,” Sheriff Jordan said.

La. Sports Hall of Famers P.J. Brown, Anthony Thomas Visit Winnfield

Two Winnfield High School alumni were inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 25. Prior to the induction ceremony in Natchitoches, P.J. Brown and Anthony Thomas revisited their hometown of Winnfield Wednesday, June 22, for a meet and greet open to the public.

Winnfield Men Plead Guilty To Firearms Charges, Face Up To 10 Years

Two Winnfield men, Ashton L. Howard and Aaron Thomas, pled guilty Wednesday, June 15 to possessing stolen firearms. Howard, 33, and Thomas, 26, both of Winnfield, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a stolen firearm in a hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen L. Hayes. Thomas also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. Their pleas will become final when accepted by U.S. District Judge Robert G. James.

City Council Approves 20162017 Budget Unanimously, Seeks Bids

As the City’s fiscal year comes to a close, the Winnfield City Council meeting on June 14 saw the approval of two budgets, and the appointment of Councilman Matt Miller as Mayor Pro-Tem for the coming year. The City Council accepted the 2015-2016 budget. The budget was accepted previously, but had to be amended to fall within the allotted 5 percent accuracy range. Councilman Hamms opposed the budget and Councilman Edwards abstained from voting. The remaining council members voted to accept it as revised.

Principals and Assistant Principals from Winn Parish schools met in the media center of the Winn Parish School Board on June 15 and 16 for Louisiana Content Standards Professional Development. They discussed new standards set by the Louisiana Department of Education and witnessed the use of a new educational tool that will be used in most classrooms this fall called LearnZillion.

Search Warrant Results in Major Drug Arrests

Officers with the Winnfield Police Department and the Winnfield Marshal’s Office executed a search warrant at 1502 Orange Street in the early morning hours of June 7 in connection with an ongoing investigation. Discovered during the search was a large amount of illegal drugs including Promethazine syrup, bags of marijuana, Carisoprodol pills, Hydrocodone pills, amitripltyline pills along with several rocks of crack-cocaine and crystal methamphetamine. Unused baggies and a set of scales were also recovered.
